EVGA GTX 460 does not post on P5N32-e sli

Thread Starter
I just received my gtx 460 from EVGA B-stock today. I installed it in my sig rig named Core 2 duo along with my 8800gt and the system would not post.

Then I took out the 8800gt and just had the gtx 460 in there and still it would not post. So I installed it in my sig rig SB goodness and it booted just fine and ran 3dmark11 and it was stable.

But it just won't post in my Core 2 duo rig. It seems to be boot looping and after a minute or two it beeps. Sometimes when I boot up there are 3 beeps. I'm not sure what to do. I've tried all 3 pcie slots and nothing. Help would be appreciated.

Oh and my gtx 570 works just fine in the Core 2 duo rig as well as the 8800gt already in there.

Edit: From asus's website it says 3 beeps can be a graphics card issue. Although the gpu works fine in my other comp so I'm not sure what to try with the gpu.

bump!

Anything I can try?

In addition to the OP, I've reset the cmos as well as updated to the latest bios.

Did you make sure you have the PCI-E power connected? It's possible that you forgot it or that the PSU isn't providing enough power

OK my first thought is your Power! your 500watt power should be enough though. Make sure you have both 6pins plugged into the card. ( i know this is basic but sometimes its the easy things)

Have you attempted to put your GTX 460 in a different computer? thus if it doesn't work in computer number 2 then the card is the common denominator and you can contact support.

Good Luck thumb.gif

Yes. I should have put that in the OP "PCIE power is connected". I knew someone was going to ask that. tongue.gif

Although I did also try to boot up without them connect to just see what would happen. The system acted exactly the same as with them plugged in, no POST, instead of the annoying beeping sound that tells you they aren't plugged in the card is just silent like there isn't anything wrong. At least when you forget plug in the 6-pin on my 8800gt it whines like crazy to let you know, not sure if all gpu's do this.

Yep the gtx 460 boots up fine in my 2500k sig rig. Also my gtx 570 does work in the Core 2 duo rig so it isn't the power supply.

I don't get how a gpu could work in one comp but not another....but then again I don't get how some ram has that problem either.

Well, It's probably not your PSU or GPU - it looks like some sort of unexplained incompatibility. I don't have any great ideas. You could try to RMA the card but I'm not optimistic that it'd fix anything.

I bet its because the p5n32 pci slot is 1st generation. I had the same problem before with same board

Yea me neither. I did put in a ticket to EVGA just because maybe they have some tricks up their sleeve, but then again I would think OCN should have even more. thumb.gif

Googling issues with the P5N32-e sli mobo seems to bring up the fact that it was not the best motherboard by far (to put it lightly). Many people had problems with them I guess.

I suppose that is possible. Although it should be backwards compatible. Seems like I just picked the wrong mobo back in the day.

Well I got a reply from EVGA and this was their response: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Quote:
Hello,

With all the hardware working in different systems, it seems like there is some kind of incompatibility issue between either the power supply and the video card, or the motherboard and the video card.

Since the newest BIOS didn't help, have you tried any of the older BIOS revisions? I have seen where an older BIOS version can work when a newer one doesn't. It's rare, but worth a try. I also noticed it doesn't specify that the PCIe slots are at least 2.0 spec. Our cards tend to have issues with PCIe 1.0 slots. If it is a PCIe 1.0 board, that may be the issue.

If you can, try swapping the power supply from your main rig to this system to see if it's something between the CX500 and this card. It shouldn't be, but it could happen.

Let us know how testing goes. It may just end up being the an incompatibility issue between the card and the motherboard though.

Regards,
EVGA

So pretty much they said pcie2.0 isn't backwards compatible with all pcie1 mobos......would be nice for them to actually specifically state that before before I bought it. Although I'm not sure how it isn't compatible with pcie1....

Although the card works just fine in my extremely cheap MSI G41M4-F socket 775 mobo (which is also PCIE 1) but not my nice and expensive (back in the day) P5n32-e sli mobo...go figure. So I had to piece together a pc using the MSI board to get it folding 24/7. It only cost me $5 to do so because I needed to buy a molex to pcie 6 pin adapter but it was a big hassle.
