X-Qpack S939 Build - post XMAS Gift for GF

Thread Starter
Situation -
1. GF needs a comp and wants us to build it together.
2. I would like to do this by the new year so it will be even more of a surprise b/c she will think XMas is over for her.
3. The best she can do at home is (I hate to even say the words) DIAL UP
4. I would like her to be able to come over with the PC and hook into my network for updates etc
5. She mostly uses the internet at my house on my laptop but is bored as hell at home. This comp would mostly be for gaming (nothing too intensive), listening to mp3, research papers/notes for a few lectures that she is taking. Basically stand alone stuff that does not require internet.
6. Obviously do this as cheap as possible and still not put together a piece of crap
7. Needs to be a small portable case like the X-Qpack so I'm thinking MicroATX
8. She will run everything at stock.

Parts
Case Aspire X-Qpack $74.99 - $10 MIR = $64.99
MB BIOSTAR TForce6100 $69.99 - $10 MIR = $59.99
CPU Retail w/ Stock Cooling AMD Athlon 64 3700 San Diego 2.2GHz S939 $82
GFX Card Sapphire Radeon X1800GTO PCI Express $119.99
RAM OCZ Premier 1GB (2x512 Dual Channel) $114.99 - $11 MIR = $103.99
HD WD 160GB SATA $64.99
Keyboard Rosewill $4.99
Headphones Sennheiser EH150 $24.99
Sound Audigy 4 SE $49.99
OS Win XP Home OEM $89.99
Monitor ViewSonic Q171b 17" 8ms Black $189.99 - $50 MIR = $139.99

PSU - The case comes with a 420W PSU but I have read that it is unreliable. In order to cut costs I think we will use it until it dies and replace it then.

Parts I already have from other builds - Sony DVDRW, Frozen CPU Mouse, Gigabit NIC, Modem, fans, misc wires etc

If my math is correct that is $805.90 which is a bit high for me at the moment since I am paying off a Sony XBR3 I do have some parts floating around here that I could use. I have a Maxtor 120GB IDE so we can subtract 64.99 from the total. Use onboard sound then subtract another $49.99. New total minus those two things would be $690.92. Still a little rich. She does have a 15 " CRT from an old computer that I guess she can get by with for the time being bringing the total down to $550.93. I would like to keep the budget without monitor around that mark or closer to $500 if possible. No higher than $650 with monitor. I am trying to anticipate shipping costs etc adding to the total for some items. I chose that MB and CPU b/c it was a combo deal on newegg so I am open to suggestions. Actually if someone suggess a totally different build I would be ok with that too just keep in mind the case constraint - mobility is key, she needs to be able to bring it around with her. As far as software I will be using open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird etc. and the games she plays are those crime drama things, CSI, Law & Order, games from the Adventure Company, with a little Doom3 and Half Life 2 thrown in for good measure.

My Questions
1. Are there any major conflicts with that configuration?
2. Will the GFX card fit?
3. Can someone put something better together for me?
4. Did I leave anything out?
5.. Last but not least , help me help me help me ??!!??!! Well not a question but you get the idea.

Thank you so much for your help.

PS - if all goes well she wants to get into overclocking after this

Not bad at all ive recently built 2 Q-Pack systems my self for my father and aunt, with very similar specs, but I would recommend the Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard, rock stable and very easy to use but otherwise its looks real good. Also you don't need a nic onboard is fine and I if you were to get an audio card I would look at an X-fi the have recently come down in price and i find it to be far better than an audigy 2 or 4. And I have no complaints about that PSU except you will need a 6 pin PCI-E power adapter as it doesn't have one.

Thanks for the quick response. Good call on the PCI-E power adapter! I'll add it to the list. Considering that she will be using headphones at this point do you think I can hold off on the audio card or is the onboard going to be that bad? I am partial to ASUS myself so I will check out that board.

I think this card would be within budget X-Fi XtremeGamer $69.99 Thoughts?

Looked at the ASUS MB - looks good but I did notice that the reviews on newegg favored the Biostar one. I''ll prob still go ASUS but that will tack on another $20 to the cost plus the cost of the new audio card. I can swing the bump in MB price but I think adding a card can be done later. Also how bad would the integrated graphics be for the types of games she would play ie. Law & Order etc? (Excluding Doom 3 and Half Life 2 of course.) If I can get by with the integrated for the time being it will make affording a new monitor easier.

The 6100 benchmarks around the same as a GeForce FX 5200, but will use alot of important resources, but it would suffice for the time being if they are the only type of games she plays

Law & Order will run easily on it considering that these are the

The onboard graphics aren't bad at all, they actually do quite well, but if you are going onboard I would go with a 6150 instead of the 6100, I've heard mixed results about it.
