[Gamespot] Ubisoft on new IPs: "We won't even start if we don't think we can build a franchise out of it" - Page 3

I enjoy sequels but I really only want sequels if the game was created to have them. The problem with many sequels is that they are an afterthought. Many games only get a sequel because it did really well and it is easy to capitalize on its success. I do think it takes time to create a quality product so a yearly release cycle is not something I'd be fond of. I definitely do not want different studios/teams working on different iterations of a game as that will create some inconsistencies and hinder the quality. I see games like Mario or CoD or Final Fantasy as a series, but not sequels as most of them are not continuing the same storyline/characters. A good example of a series with sequels would be Uncharted or Metal Gear or perhaps Metroid Prime or Witcher to name a very select few. I'd name something from XBOX but I have never owned one so I cannot say about Halo or ME series.

tl;dr sequels continue/build upon the story and should be planned from the begging. A series is just a game with similar gameplay/set in the same universe but storyline is not connected -- these are usually created after the fact since the original game became successful or they try to convolute the story to make the game fit somehow.

I can't remember but I think EA said the exact same thing, Not surprising just sad. Leave innovation to Indies and mods.

It's all Quantity over Quality these days, and they're going so far as to blatantly saying it out loud without even being shy about it.

Doesn't matter if people play the game for more than 5 hours, all that matters is that you meet your quarterly KPI goals, generate profit, and keep the wheel spinning. What's actually going on in the game's core and direction.. well, who cares about that? We want sales.

i am not a fan of the "make the first game, then once successful, make a prequel".

as for sequels to games, i don like when games go past 2, maybe 3 - my interest starts to drop after that. the ending to Assassin's Creed 3 kind of killed it for me for that series - i don't know if i am going to enjoy the series any more.

franchises might be good an all, but if there aren't any WOW factors in each one, then i don't think they will do very well, and do not deserve my $$'s.

This is what I am expecting from BF4.

That's pretty much where Battlefield as a series is heading. Whether people admit it or not, the fact that EA went and bought Battlefield3 to Battlefield9 .COM domain names is a clear indicator of what's to come.

Heck I won't be surprised if they make it so you can't unlock certain guns/equipment without paying for it.

Meh not really shocking, most publishers want something they can milk.
