Help picking a 780

Thread Starter
I am in the market to purchase a 780 and have a few questions about the different types. From what I have read, the ACX style cooler is the one to get for the best overclocking due to the thermal limiting. Others say that if you intend on running SLI, to make sure to get the blower style if they are next to each other to help with cooling. With the ACX, my worry is that the heat dumped from my video card will move to my processor and raise its idle/load temp. I wouldn't normally worry about that but with a 4.5 overclock on air I wouldn't want it pushing it up there too high at load. Is this a serious concern to have?

I also would like the card to be a reference pcb so that I could eventually get a waterblock for it. These cards seem to do well on water. This would be something I would consider in the near to distant future.

If you care about noise go for a dual fan open cooler design, Asus direct cu 2, windforce, msi lightning or gaming or the ACX from EVGA. Check out the reviews for each to determine which one is best or fits your needs best. The added heat to the case depends on your case and airflow but I wouldn't worry about 5 degrees extra unless you are already around 85 degrees under load on the cpu.

If you want to go watercooling in the future a reference might be a good idea because you have more options for choosing a waterblock, but there are waterblocks that fit non reference ones.

Worth noting that the EVGA cooler (ACX) is on a reference PCB, so it's a decent choice even if you think you might watercool the card down the road.

I have 2 EVGA Cards already and have had nothing but good things to say about them. I will most likely go with the EVGA ACX cooler version of the 780 then. Does anyone happen to know if EVGA is ok with the removal of the cooler/shroud for replacing thermal compound and watercooling. I thought I read it somewhere on this forum at one point that EVGA is perfectly fine with it.

And last question, before I just pull the plug and buy a card, is it better to go with the Evga Superclocked or just the regular 780. I haven't seen too much on this.

Go the regular as there is no binning on these cards and you can simply overclock the standard version as high as, or past that of the Superclocked.

I would just go with a EVGA with a acx cooler because its quieter than a reference design cooler and still uses reference high quality pcb's that have the largest variety of waterblocks

That is exactly what I am thinking. I am setup to be notified whenever they get more in stock.

vs

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130942

The top is the one I am looking at. The other is also on there but has no reviews, is 10 dollars less, and has a lower mem and clock. Is there something that I am missing between the two other than that? I am not worried about the $10, but I am curious as to where there are two entries on the site.

I have the regular 780 with ACX. It is pretty good and overclocks past ACX speeds anyway, but if you aren't good with graphics card overclocking settings maybe paying the extra 10 bucks would be worth it. I bought it the day they went out of stock on Newegg too, it'll be a couple of weeks for you to decide. Good luck to ya! thumb.gif
