ASRock 990fx extreme 4 or asus M5A99FX Pro R 2.0?

Hey sorry if this has been asked before, I did a quick search and found nothing.

I'll start off saying that I haven't overclocked before, but I am well aware of the damage I risk in doing so. I am planning a new build with an FX-6350 and would like to know what board would be better for overclocking. I understand parts work in a get what you pay for capacity but would like some help narrowing it down.

What I do know is that the VRM's power phases are important, the asrock having the advantage there it seems with an 8+2 rather than 6+2. Also in my research I've learned that a heatsink on the vrm is important. I know that the extreme3 doesn't have one, does the extreme4? i know the asus does.

In all honesty I probably wouldn't overclock beyond 4.4-4.6 tops but i would like the headroom and the knowledge that the board isn't going to fry because of the overclock. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Hi there! The extreme4 does have a heatsink over the VRMs. So that could be a better option over the extreme3.

You could very well go with the asus m5a99fx. I've heard people managing to push their overclocks on that board to a very high number without difficulty. You should be able to hit 4.4-4.6 on this board, which still heavily relies on your silicon lottery luck on your particular 6350 (sadly).

Should you consider the gigabyte 990fx-ud3, try not to as most people have encountered VRM overheating issues even though it has a heatsink for the VRMs.

The choice really came down to these two boards, if the sabertooth was closer in price i'd go with that but really it is out of my budget.

As far as silicon lottery luck, I already knew about that smile.gif I hoped that the 6350 would have had a bit more overhead than that. Still I don't think a .5 ghz overclock is too much to expect from it, however I'm really just basing that on the 8350's .8 ghz and up overclocks. Just so long as i can hit 4.4 with reasonable voltage I'll be happy.

Edit:
I was leaning towards Asus myself, but then saw that the board didn't have as many power phases as the ASRock board so I was a little concerned about damaging the board.

Hmm, not having enough power phases doesn't mean you might damage the board during overclocking, it'll just mean you won't be able to push the overclocking higher. The Extreme4 does have 8+2 power phases while the Asus has 6+2. The m5a99fx does seem to have a very beefy VRM and NB heatsink though. Plus, both boards cost the same haha that makes choosing between the two a little tougher eh? In my honest opinion, I would go with the Asus board because I've always known Asus boards to be very robustly made.

Its your call now.
