So I originally started this topic with a thread in the Intel section but I realized that for what my friend wanted an AMD CPU would be better option considering his budget.

In light of the release of the new 760 he agreed to raise his budget a little.

I am thinking for the build

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($119.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI 970A-G46 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($78.56 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($39.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($58.56 @ Amazon)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card ($249.99 @ Amazon)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($90.91 @ Amazon)
Total: $638.00
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

They didn't have the Rosewill Stallion Series 600 W PSU on the part picker site so that is also included.

http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Stallion-Series-ATX12V-RD600/dp/B0096SNGP8/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374042839&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=Rosewill+Stallion+Series+RD600+600W+ATX12V+V2.3+SLI+Ready+CrossFire+Ready+Power+Supply

I am not sure what to get for a case and whether my motherboard choice is a good one?

Plus will the CPU and RAM bottleneck the GPU?

Also he doesn't need an optical drive since he can use mine to install the OS.

Thanks

The CPU is good and it will run games fine even after a year or two. There wont be any bottlenecks. I havent had any experience with MSI motherboards but there are a lot of people who like them and they look reliable. As for the case, I have a NZXT Tempest 410 and its a really good case for the money so I recommend checking it out, you can probably find one for around 60$.

Well, to get things moving, I'd recommend you opt towards the 1TB WD Blue since the price difference is negligible. Be sure to use the $15 off $50 deal from Newegg by using the Newegg mobile app and Google Wallet. Evens out at $55 again.

The smaller amount of RAM will work for you short-term and should be enough for most things. I'd definitely hold out for cheaper RAM too.

What are you doing about cooling?

I'll leave this here too:

Do need windows, but I think I would need a little more wattage for the GPU, the minimum recommended amount is 500W.

Nope, you should be more then fine with a 450W. I have 2 GTX 670's at home and they only take about 600W.

*EDIT*
Take a look at this video from linus on power consumption

Change the motherboard as the msi amd boards are not reliable for overclocking.

I dont know how far you can go over $700 but heres an idea.

This one is, its actually a decent unit, no you can't overclock to insane degrees, but you can do about a 10-15% overclock on it with a good enough cooler. To overclock, the next cheapest board (Gigabyte 990FX-UD3) is $125.

I do believe your thinking of the UD3H, though I could be mixed up.

Thanks, I'm not too overly familiar with AMD Motherboards.

I say screw the Caviar black as the performance and reliability difference between that and the Seagate Barracuda or the WD Caviar Blue is negligible. Take that money and change out that LEPA psu for a nice Rosewill Capstone 450W.

I wouldnt do that. Generally those are junk.

"only needs a 450w psu" pertains to HIGH quality units, such as the capstone for example

Exactly, on a low low quality unit you would need an 800W+ for this system to not catch fire.

The only problem with the gigabyte 78lmt usb3 is that it does not have sata 6. HDD's do not benefit from 6 but if you ever want to add an ssd then speed will be restricted. It is a decent board for the price though.

Someone mentioned the biostar ta970. This is actually a good value board and the vrm's used are of good quality even though the phase is 4+1.

The corsair cx 500 watt is not the best but i think it will do for this system.

The price is over $700 but this build includes a decent cooler. I have an fx 6300 and the performance increase from overclocking is very noticable.
