help with overclocking

Thread Starter
hi guys ive got the AMD Athlon II X3 435 and ive unlocked it to phenom II x4 b35 which is running 4 x 2.9 GHz. my motherboard is a microstar ms-7599 and ive recently OCed my graphics card a bit so i noticed i should try OC my processor too. i mean, i'm a total newbie when it comes to this so id be very grateful if you could just give me some general tips about OCing the cpu, this one especially if you know how. is it safe? is it less demanding than gpu OCing? is it noticeable? does it shorten the CPU lifetime by much? how will it impact my overall performance? does it need additional cooling? im running 4gbs of ddr3 ram and a radeon HD 7750 (which i OCed a bit) and a 550w psu. soo all in all im just looking for a tutor (lol), cause i really dont know what it takes, the software, the process, the precautions, please help!

Unlocking the core would already be considered a type of "overclock" by most people as you are enabling faster performance than the processor is rated for. If you overclock right then it wont decrease the life of the CPU at all. To do so you need to make sure that you stay within the heat specs at all times and never go beyond the thermal design. You can increase the voltage a little bit to get some extra MHz, but dont go too much as more voltage can shorten the CPU life, or in extreme cases of too much voltage can even damage the CPU. That CPU is technically rated for 1.5v, or maybe even a little higher but to be safe with an already unlocked core and no experience in the matter I would not recommend you go over 1.45v. You also should have better cooling if you are overclocking. With the added core unlock and trying to get some extra MHz you should look into buying a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO as it is a very cheap cooler for the performance it gives. With that cooler you could be looking at around 3.5GHz, assuming the processor is even capable of doing that with the added core. Sometimes you just get "duds" and you wont be able to overclock well when the out of spec core is added into the mix.

To make things easy to start with just look into AMD Overdrive for your beginning overclocking and make sure you dont set the stuff to apply on bootup until you are completely sure your computer with the overclock is stable.

how much do you think i could go with my current stock cooler? and do you think its a good idea if instead i bought an aftermarket 120mm case cooler since my gpu is OCed too?

I have a Phenom II X4 925, stock is at 2.8Ghz..OCced it to 3.2Ghz on stock cooling and temps reached as high as 65C on load..found myself a Deep Cool Ice Edge Mini which I modded with an extra fan for push-pull configuration, I was able to hit 3.304Ghz and keep temps at 57C tops..

My HD4670 is OCced too, and just by adding an Aux Fan underneath the GPU, I was able to keep it at 60C on load (previously 75C!), which makes you think that the fans Sapphire designed into the GPU is just not enough if you try and OC it stock..(the heat the Sapphire Fan blew from the heatsink can't escape as fast without that Aux Fan, so my PC Case was probably also a factor)

For my CPU Overclock, I did it through BIOS as my Mobo has great support for OC (Asus M4A78LT-M LE). I tested for stability via Prime95 and Folding@Home and OCCT (I did those three just to be sure it's really stable, though I also think it's overkill to use all three)

For my GPU, I OC was done through ATI Tool, and tested with OCCT and some gaming..

You might not be able to overclock with the 4th core unlocked. I got this chip for my kid and when I tried overclocking it with 4th core unlocked on an ASUS M4A89GTD the PC would reboot stating the 4th core was disabled. I have an H100 on the CPU.

+1 This. If you can't, you can either go on stock speeds with 4 cores, or maybe OC with just 3 and then:
