Nvidia introduced a lot of new video cards in a pretty short amount of time over the past few months. First the new flagship arrived, the GeForce GTX Titan. Then came the 700 series, one new card after another in short succession: the GeForce GTX 780, GeForce GTX 770 en GeForce GTX 760. Today we'll be discussing the performance of SLI and 3-way SLI of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 700 series.

We tested the following configurations:

Nvidia GeForce GTX 760
Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 SLI
Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 3-way SLI
Nvidia GeForce GTX 770
Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 SLI
Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 3-way SLI
Nvidia GeForce GTX 780
Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 SLI
Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 3-way SLI

Very interesting results. Seems 780 3-way is broken/useless in quite a few games. 3-way 770 sli is nice jump over 780 sli (matching or beating 780 3-way many times), and 760 sli is a great deal considering it consistently outperforms 780.

I wish they included 1440p benchmarks as well, but oh well. Glad to see how thorough they were.

Also, did they mention what cards they used? I saw no mention of which model 760, 770 they used. Is it safe to assume 2GB models? If so, that is still impressive for those claiming 2GB is not enough nowadays.

*edit* I do see they are 2GB cards.

3 way 770 would be a great alternative to 780/Titan SLI as long as you accept the greater risk of 3 way SLI vs 2 SLI

GTX 770 scaling from SLI to Tri-SLi = average

GTX 760 Tri-SLi equals GTX 770 SLi = overall
but the GTX 760 Tri-SLi seems to be the most hit or miss in terms of performance

GTX 760 SLi beats GTX 780 = overall in gaming, not all games

I didn't realize Tri-SLi GTX 770's was so beastly in gaming.
makes we wanna see a review with 4GB GTX 770's in Tri-SLi.

Some games are just written like crap and do not scale at all, or is it the drivers.?

power consumption, MEH but could be worse I guess..

scaling page says it all really:

Conclusion

The higher the resolution and the higher the quality settings, the more you will benefit from an SLI configuration. For example, the GTX 700 cards in SLI only scale an average of 55%, but in 5760x1080 with maximum settings the average is between 68% and 75%, depending on the card. A third card doesn't add as much as a second card does, and is typically more prone to compatibility issues than two cards.

A single GPU will always experience less synchronization problems such as micro-stuttering, for obvious reasons. That's why you really shouldn't spend money on two mid-range cards for an SLI configuration, and instead invest in one powerful high-end card with the same level of performance as two mid-range cards. In this case, better to have one GTX 780 than two GTX 760s. However, if you already own a mid-range card, adding a second one will of course boost performance.

While it's expensive, SLI is the most interesting for the high-end cards. It enables you to play with resolutions and settings that are simply impossible to achieve with a single GPU. The benchmark results were clear, a single GTX 780 often isn't enough for gaming in 5760x1080 with maximum settings and anti-aliasing. The second card is what makes the game playable. Considering the price of a GTX 780 or Titan, this is obviously not a hobby for the average gamer.

The chart on the previous page is very useful for finding out exactly what you need in order to be able to play a certain game in a certain resolution, and be guaranteed 60 fps. Should you buy a second mid-range card, or is it better to hold off and invest in that one high-end card?

For consting around the same after OC GTX780s > 3 x GTX770. Same price too + you get 3GB of vRAM and less problems.

Finally, a reveiw site that includes frametimes!

Its quite intersting to see that although two gtx 760's are faster then a single gtx 780 the frametime for the two gtx 760's are higher then the single gtx 780.
