X79 Motherboard Choices

Thread Starter
I'm currently interning at a Marketing/Medical illustration firm and I happen to come aboard right when they have begun to contemplate an upgrade to their render farm.

This build is completely revolving around the CPU, the one in question is 3930k, which we are looking to have a stable 24/7 OC of 4.2-4.4ghz. The budget has us limited to the $200 range of X79 motherboards so in terms of OC stability and longevity, which of these choices would be preferred?

ASRock X79 Extreme3

ASUS P9X79 LE

MSI X79A-GD45

GIGABYTE GA-X79-UP4

Also, would this cooler serve the 3930k well?
NZXT HAVIK 140

Thanks for any help in advance. thumb.gif

So, another question, why would you choose these 2 over the others?

Before you consider the ASUS, consider their support.
http://www.overclock.net/t/1397643/asus-p8z77-v-failure-and-asus-response

With that being said, the ASUS P9X79 LE is a decent board. I would go with the ASRock or Gigabyte. I had a lot of MSI failures about 12 years ago and I can't seem to allow myself to try on of their newer board so I don't have any experience with them.

The NZXT HAVIK 140 will suffice for your overclocking needs and should be very reliable. Good luck!

I'm currently fighting with an Asus x79 motherboard right now, a Rampage Extreme IV Gene for my 3930K, and after doing a done of diagnostics and contacting Asus support, got an RMA, sent it in, waited 2 weeks, they sent me back the same BUSTED motherboard, and then the "fun" began. I contacted them again, and after even more stupid questions, I have to send the board back AGAIN.

Hopefully they will just replace the board, but even if they do, I will most likely be down about a MONTH while dealing with Asus.

Here is but an example of what I JUST went through while talking to their "support" last night ...

If they don't fix it, get me another working motherboard, and refund my money, I'll be buying a GA-X79-UD3 or UP4.

I've had many Asus boards, and usually they are good, but one thing is for sure, when they don't work, Asus support leaves MUCH to be desired.

Ok, i think the gigabyte will probably be what we choose as I am more partial to gigabyte regardless. Though, if I'm not mistaken, there was a spell on gigabyte's X79 boards where they had tremendous issues is many fields of play. Is this correct and if it is, have they rectified themselves?
