Intel CPU Questions

Hi, sorry for being one of those guys with this type of first post, but I want to "build a PC" sometime in September, and Ive been looking on the ibuypower dot com site.

I was looking at alienware, but they are too expensive even with my budget of 3k

One of the 1st questions I notice, when selecting a tower is the CPU options either I have

i7s
3820 or 3939K or 3970X

The prices are standard, then +300 then +800

But with the new
4430- 4770 the prices for the best 4770 is only a +200

Is the 4770 not that great?

Basicly I'm building this PC around playing

Final Fantasy XIV on 3 monitors. I'm pretty set on a a Titan GPU, but I would like to stick with a 3way SLI motherboard, so upgrades in the future are available.

Anyways, Since the CPU and GPU seem to be the bulk of the price, the CPU is a bit confusing when looking at overclock options

The i5 Chips seem to overclock into 5Ghz., while I don't see this with the i7's, at least as much.

Is the i5 better long term for PC games?

Oh I know it may be cheaper to actually build this myself, I'm not sure how much, but the idea of trying to get the CPU on the motherboard with thermal paste and water cool it, scares the crap out of me!

It seems like one little screw up and the cpu will get ruined!

Building a pc may seem intimidating at first, but it's not hard to do. Just follow the basic instructions in the CPU/motherboard manuals and you'll be fine. It's actually pretty hard to screw up unless the parts aren't compatible.

To answer your questions:

The 4770 is cheaper because it's a quad core, the 3930K and 3970X are hexacores. It's slightly faster in applications that aren't very well threaded, while the 39** chips will have a big advantage in applications that can use the extra cores.

As for the i5 versus i7, it likely gets a higher overclock option because i5s lack the i7s hyperthreading feature. This results in less power draw and heat, which in turn gives the chip more overclocking headroom. That's not to say i7s can't reach the same frequency, they just require better cooling to get there.
Right now, most games still aren't very well threaded. The number of multi-threaded games is increasing slowly, and may or may not get a boost once the new consoles hit, but for now an i5 is perfectly fine for gaming. If you're looking to keep this pc for a long time, you may want to consider an i7 however, the extra threads may come in handy in the future.
