AGP motherboard + CPU help

Thread Starter
Recently I bought an x850pro agp and unlocked it full 16 piplines. Now as the luck would have it, my motherboard broke down. Can somebody please help me find a good motherboard + cpu combination.

Limitations:

Agp Slot
DDR Ram
200$ budget

How does the following three cpu's look to you:

setup 1:
amd opteron 144
msi k8n neo2

setup 2:
amd 3800++
msi k8n neo2

setup 3:
core2duo e6300
asrock 775

Also, I would welcome any other setup suggestion specially ones using intel setups. One last thing can i overclock opteron with the following components.

1. ati x850 pro,
2. hauppauge 500 tv tuner,
3. creative x-fi,
4. 400W power supply
5. and 2x256 generic ddr 333 ram, 512 mb kingston value 400 ram.

Thanx

On the Intel side of things, I would advice against getting an AGP/DDR board that supports a 775 CPU. My experience with them is that there is a significant performance hit with mixing the old tech GPU/RAM with the newer tech CPUs (my undetstanding of it is that they use older chipsets and use some kind of converter for the CPU socket). With your component and budgetary constraints, I'd probably go with an AMD system based on either an inexpensive Sandy 3700+ or a 14X Opty if you can find a good AGP board that's Opty compatible.

As for your last question, the first three components you listed will not impact your OC. The 400 Watt PSU may, depending on the stability and power of the rails. The RAM will definitely be an issue. You have two things going against you. First, you're mixing two types of RAM, which will cause all of the RAM to run at the slowest speed. Second, you're using low end DDR333, which is going to severely limit your OC both due to the slow stock speed and likely due to the limited overhead available on value RAM. I would suggest adding some decent DDR400 or value DDR500 to your wish list.

I would definetly try to sell you current parts and get new technology. I was with you when i though of upgrading my motherboard and keeping agp card and such. But then i realized that just like i wanted to upgrade the board i will want then new memory and pci-e card and would need to waste more money on more things.

Just save until you can get the correct things all at once. Never half-ass things.
