What is the best overclocking ATX Z87 board? - Page 2

SupremeFX is Realtek. Just check the drivers for audio for Hero.

Also ALC898 is not necessary worse than ALC1150. ALC1150 is only better for the main speaker/headphone out, and has worse specs for the others than ALC898.

that's what i said. but the thing is, if audio and LAN controller are the only differences between the Z87-A and ROG Hero, I would settle for the Z87-A. more USB port, more SATA ports and other fancy marketing crap is not for me. I need a simple board.

But if you have something like a Xonar STX or Titanium HD, then definitely the SupremeFX on board stuff will be lacking, compared to those cards

Yes PCI-E arrangement is tough these days. I have a Noctua D14 which is smaller than the SA SBE, and I have to isolate the fan clips with tape in order not to short circuit my first PCI-E slot (sound card). The way I see it, high end air coolers have to sacrifice that 1st PCI-E slot, or just go with a whole another solution....whether an external sound card, or getting an AIO cooler. It sucks, I know how you feel. I'm patiently waiting for the Noctua D14 successor coming out in Q4 2013, and its guaranteed to be larger than the D14....so I probably have to give up my sound card and use the Hero's or go external sound card

Don't be discouraged by the folks getting low Haswell numbers. Most of them just copied and paste the sandy/ivy numbers and that's not how you OC Haswell. Uncore plays a huge roll in your OC potential. I already know you're in the other thread, so I won't link you. But just keep an eye on the Haswell OC thread and you should be just fine at 4.5ghz.

And Finally, sure go with the Z87-A. I hear it OC's great, and it will be enough for the air cooling enthusiast. Maximus Extreme and other high end boards are really for folks with exotic cooling. I personally would go with Hero though, just cuz I want the extra features and connectivity. But if I could live without it, then I would go Z87-A....because why pay for more, when you don't use it, right?
yep. i won't be using much of the stuff in the ROG Hero board. i don't intend to go multi GPU. hopefully will replace the GTX670 when something noticeably faster comes out at the $500 mark.

the ONLY problem i have the Z87X-OC is the PCI-E port setup. top most port will be covered by my "recently bought" SA SB-E Extreme cooler. in most motherboards, that top port is a PCI-E x1 slot. but in this board, that is a x16 port, and not only that, it is the recommended port if i'm using only one card.

i'm in Japan, and the price deference between the Hero and the Pro is $50 about. I wouldn't mind the Z87-A because i don't need the extra connectivity options. i just need a simple board with very good overclocking ability. less components the better, right? i am leaning towards it. still not sure if i wanna upgrade. i kinda need some new toys to play with.

i have the normal Titanium card. Not the Pro. But I just saw in a review that the Hero only has the ALC898 codec. Not the newer 1150. 898 is definitely inferior to my dedicated card. Even the 1150 is, as per what I had been hearing. However, I'm no audiophile; i won't notice the difference.

i saw a review of Z87X-OC from Gigabyte and it is a sweet card, just made for overclocking. but its PCI-E slot arragement is kinda wacko. I mean, the top most slot is the x16 slot and I won't be able to use it. that's sad.

i'm still considering the upgrade. i at least wanna hit 4.5GHz. but seeing how a lot of people are stuck at 4.2ish GHz, i'm skeptical. i know the upgrade isn't worth it, i just wanna try out new stuff. but not if i cannot hit 4.5 at least. that's why i want the best OCing board. and i know, it would depend 90% on the CPU. but what if i get a good CPU and mobo holds it back? that would suck more.

i wanted to get IB-E, but the price would be so high at launch here in Japan that i won't be able to make up my mind to get one.

None of the boards you listed or mentioned in this thread will hold you back. It will be 99% dependent on the cpu you get. If you don't need any features, get the cheapest out of the bunch.

do you think gigabyte z87 D3h is a good overclocker for 4770k? assuming that the cpu is a good sample.

I heard a decent motherboard can OC just as well as a high end motherboard....ie, Z87-A versus Maximus VI Extreme. But is it true that high end mobos have such high quality components, that it will require LESS vcore to run at the same CPU frequency? For example

Z87-A = 4.8ghz & 1.40vcore

Maximus VI Extreme = 4.8ghz 1.35vcore

Would something like this be true? I could have sworn I read something like this....but would like clarification. thumb.gif

Haswell no diff on most boards for cpu clocks. If somebody clsims it was a noobie.
Diff from my testing is rog can maintain high cpu clock woth high dram speed on all 4dimms.
