FX-8120 CPU Frequency/Multiplier Drops

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm having a problem here with my FX-8120, whenever i start up a game (this occurs on every game), and i start playing it about 15 seconds later the CPU Frequency drops to 1.7Ghz (From 3.7Ghz) and the Multiplier also drops (From 15.5 to 7) then 15-20 seconds later it goes back to 3.7Ghz, then 15 seconds later it just drops to 1.7Ghz again, and this continues till i close the game
When this happends the game i'm playing starts to lag, which is really annoying

I already disabled AMD Cool 'n Quiet, C1E, Thermal Throtling, but it just doesn't work
My CPU is not overheating (H80i cooling) and the max temp i get when this happends (core temp) is 39-40 Degrees Celcius

I also updated the BIOS to the latest version

Specs of my PC:
ASRock 970 Extreme3 Motherboard
AMD FX-8120 @ 3.7Ghz CPU
AMD Radeon HD7850 OC @ 1050/1450
OCZ ModXstream Pro 500W PSU
8GB Kingston DDR3 Ram @ 1666

I also underclocked my GPU, but that also did not work

I'm out of ideas now to get this fixed so i decided to make a thread here and hope to get a solution/fix

EDIT:
Just ran a Prime95 test, as soon as i start Prime95 the core frequency drops to 1.7Ghz the multiplier drops to 7 and the Voltage also drops to 0.8

Well this is weird

When i change everything back to default at the BIOS the CPU runs @ 3.4Ghz, when i start Prime95 it drops to 2.8Ghz
But as soon as i overclock the CPU again it just drops to 1.7Ghz again once i start Prime95

Anyone else also having this problem?

Your VRM's may be getting too hot check the temps, and put a fan over them.

Dang I wish I could remember the answer to this one. I first saw this issue at the initial release of the FX-8150 and 8120's, and I cant remember what the solution was. I havent seen it since the initial release so it much not be too widespread of an issue. Maybe there are some old thread either here or another forum that could help you out.

I just looked at the specs of your mobo and the issue is in the power phase, your VRM's are overheating causing throttling

That could be it, it's fairly hot here right now (~35 degrees celcius in my room, and this problem started when it got hot here) and when i touch the VRM i can only hold my finger on it for like 3-4 seconds
I just moved my H80i to the top of my case (the H80i blocked the VRM) instead of at the back and i placed some fans which are now blowing air at the VRM and it seems like it's not dropping below 2.8Ghz now (1.4Ghz in idle)

Atleast i can game normally now

Thanks for the help!
