I don't think Intel want's AMD profit margins.

Yeah if anyone's got the money to back Windows 8 tablets up with little to lose, it's Intel. biggrin.gif

We seem to be entering a phase where single core performance has hit a wall. Either that or Intel simply will not improve performance due to an absent sense of threat (namely AMD's current lagging position).

On top of that, Intel is unable to persuade consumers to upgrade to the latest and greatest. The CPU market for high end desktops, one of Intel's bastions for high margins is rapidly contracting. If ARM becomes competitive in the server market, things could get worse for Intel.

I certainly do not believe that the stock market reflects the truth potential for a company, but right now, Intel's future is looking increasingly stagnant.

Well if you consider the desktop market is shrinking fast and portable is increasing then there is some room for concern. Also consider the world market (as in money) price is coming to head. Intels future in avenues other than desktop or server is getting weaker. APUs are starting to flood the portable market, higher profit margins for manufacturer and seller alike. It doesn't matter a great deal that they may be sub-performing CPU-wise to Intel, but their on-board graphics is second to none. There is a lot of uncertainty at the moment in Intel's ability to pierce the mobile market, rather convert it to x86. So you can see why analyst might be a bit skeptical for now.

Right now, it's looking like Intel is just trying to milk what they can out of the current market. Note the current Haswell price increases over prior generations. They know the desktop market is contracting, so they're just trying to get what they can it seems.

For day to day use on a low power, low end system, I'd agree that AMD is the more balanced system for your money. If I needed a budget laptop right now for example, AMD is what I would buy. But at the same time, Intel has a lot of marketing muscle and the ability to strong arm AMD out (like what happened during the K8 era) even if AMD were to offer a stronger solution overall. Of course, the laptop market seems to be in a state of contraction right now.

It seems that Intel is trying to "upsell" people into buying Ultrabooks (Macbook Air clones), but I suspect that the sales are not where they would like them to be.

I say that Intel is in a period of stagnation right now, because well, the performance of their CPUs is effectively in one and there's even reason to believe that they may even be in decline with their core products. I suppose it's also worth mentioning that Intel is not just a CPU company and it does have other product lines, some of which might be able to offset the PC decline.

They need a major breakthrough to keep up the improvements we used to see in the past. We need another Conroe.7c1.jpg
