IPS for general use and media viewing?

Thread Starter
hey all, can you help me out real quick?

got a friend looking for a nice monitor to go with her laptop. she'll use it for general computer use and media viewing.

the max output of the laptop is 2560x1600, note that it's an intel HD5000. since it's for media viewing, her media will all be 1080p or less so i'm thinking 1080p. since she won't game on this i'm only concerned about image quality and not ghosting.

my understanding is that IPS don't come above 60hz right now, is that correct?

any recommendations for her needs? most of the chatter i see is for monitors way above this pay grade (1440p or 120/144 hz, etc.) so those don't help me match her needs.

any help is most appreciated! thanks!

Nothing wrong with a macbook air. Great little machine. Especially the haswell parts. Expensive but if you can afford it, why not?

U2312hm is a good one.

I would definitely recommend the U2312HM if you don't mind the AG coating. Otherwise, the S2340 (IPS) or even the S2740 are excellent choices, with glossy panels and hidden bezels giving a far more modern look than the Industrial look of the Ultrasharps. The S2440 is also a great choice, perhaps the best, for media due to using a VA-type panel. VA panels are the onlyccurrently available display type that can actually produce a contrast ratio over 1200:1 or so, coming in at around 4-5000:1 on decent displays. They have the rich, ink like blacks that other monitors simply cannot achieve, but also can be bright as the sun.
I would take her to a store with both VA and IPS, glossy and matte (and semi matte), and see what she prefers. Whichever she picks, is the best option smile.gif
