3960X OCed to 4.8Ghz using 1.425 vcore & 1.2520 VTT

Thread Starter
CPU Vcore: 1.4250V
VTT CPU Vcore: 1.2520V
VDIMM volt: 1.65V
104.4 x 46 = 4.8 Ghz
3D Mark 11 Stable
Intel Burn Test: High stress level stable
Temperature on highest core: 77 degree
CPU & GPU both watercooled by 2 x 480 AMS radiators in push-pull configuration using 16 Corsair AP-120 high performance series of 120mm fans.
My RAM is 4x8GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum rated to run 2400MHz @1.65V. I am running them now at 1670Mhz using 1.65V
Is 1.4250 vcore too high for 24/7 usage? Understand Intel set the max @1.4v for 3960x which is what I am using now.

Can I squeeze any more juice from my rig or reduce any voltages?

Is your 3960x a C1 or C2 cpu?

You can tell by cpuz, 6 is C1 and 7 is C2:

C1 chips can have VCCSA and VTT up to 1.4v safely and C2 chips allow 1.2v max for the same settings.

Going over these will harm the IMC and the cpu will degrade quickly or die.

Rest looks ok.

That's a little higher than I'd be comfortable with running 24/7, in terms of vcore, but the VTT1/VCCSA absolutely should be lowered to a MAXIMUM of 1.2v or you seriously risk degradation of the CPU IMC. Running 2133 9-11-10-28 memory @ 2580 10-12-10-26 1T, I've never needed more than 1.170v for VTT/VCCSA, so with 1600-1866 speeds you really should not require more than stock voltage and can probably get away with using less (1.050 to 1.125v should bewwhere it's comfortable).
Try dropping the vCore as well. I have found that using the BCLK to bump up the frequency, say 47x105 instead of 48x100, requires less voltage (I've never had to increase the vCore to increase the BCLK), and would be a good thing to try.

Hi. Thanks all. Nelksan yeah I noticed that too. But I read across articles saying that if bclk is overclocked, it overclock everything including things that are not meant to be overclocked like ssd etc. Is it really true for x79 platform?

I run mine between 103.1 and 103.8 for 24/7 use, and I have had no issues running as high as 104.9 for benching. Generally, the margin is about +/-5to7, so 93-95 on the low end, and 105-107 on the high end. I would start by trying 101, then 101.5, then 102, but then going up slowly; maybe by 0.2 increments for a couple notches, and then just one at a time. You only have to go up as much as you need to hit the speed you want, so don't use 105 if 103 will get you where you want to be, but it's still good to know what the limits are of your system (CPU/MB).

If you have a Rampage IV Extreme (update sig rig, btw wink.gif ), set CPU Clock Skew to -2 and PCI-E Clock Skew to -20 to greatly increase the ability to BCLK overclock without stability issues.

I have never once had a single issue with my SSD or any of the 4-5 HDD's in my machine, nor with anything else for that matter, as a result of BCLK overclocking. Basically, the multiplier is already SO high (44-48x), that simply going from 100 to 103 can result in a HUGE increase: from say 4.4 or 4.8Ghz to 4.53 to 4.94Ghz! Ram, using say the 21.33x multiplier (for DDR3-2133) would go to DDR3-2198.

Just make sure you keep up with any voltages (secondary) if necessary, and to be methodical.
