I'd highly recommend the modern, recent release: XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The age-old games in the series were too confusing for me to get into, but the modern one definitely reminded me vaguely of things like Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem. Later on, the game seems to get annoying though...

Thanks for the ideas. I think I might try that Medieval II, looks pretty good. Some of those also have demos I've seen so that would be easy enough to try out.
