Xonar Essence STX quite hot!

Thread Starter
So I finally installed the Essence STX in my PC and I'm sorta getting to terms with it but one thing that I've noticed is it gets quite hot! Especially a few spots on the back of the soundcard near where the moulex connector is. I'ld say the temp is around 60-80C from touching it. Is this normal?? Do these cards get fairly hot or is there something wrong with my card and its gonna start smoking soon?!!

Thanks!

You probably shouldn't be touching the PCB while the machine is on lol.

I have no clue if mine gets hot, I'll check when I get home from work.

Do you have a video card under it? perhaps the STX is getting residual heat from a video card.

I know... It was like a quick touch... nothing seemed to go wrong though... or so I hope!

The STX is quite far away from the GPU. Its quite close to the PSU though but the PSU doesn't produce much heat... My GPU doesn't produce that much heat either when you look at it as its got a monster radiator...

My Titanium HD gets quite warm, and it's sitting in the furthest PCI-E slot from the GPU, with the GPU being water cooled and the case having excellent airflow. I have considered putting a 92mm fan blowing over it, but audio equipment runs hot as a rule... If you ever need a huge heatsink, rip apart an old stereo/receiver.
I am confident that unless you are hearing problems, then there aren't any. It is frankly pretty amazing that such a small piece of plastic/silicon/metal can create such high quality audio. Heat, then, is the necessary byproduct.

See if direct airflow will cool it, but I would not fret either way....

Thanks cheers!
Haven't heard any problems from the soundcard so I guess it's running fine and heat is just the byproduct of a high end soundcard I suppose...
