New here, getting started on building a computer

Thread Starter
I would like to learn more about building custom computers. What would be the best place to start learning about compatibility?

I know that the CPU and motherboard have to be compatible. I'm thinking the motherboard and the case has to be compatible too?

Other than that, I know you can fit in any hard drive, any DVD/BR drives, any graphics card that fits the slot and enough PSU to match, and the memory is generally GDDR3.

So where should I get started to learn and what's the best place to hear about news for CPU parts?

Every CPU has a socket type. You need to get a motherboard of that socket.

For Ram, this is based on the motherboard, on any new hardware this will be DDR3 memory

For graphics cards as long as it is PCIe you will be ok (now adays it is all going to be PCIe)

Stick with a SATA drive for your hard drive, blu ray or dvd drives.

Best thing to do is just browse around, read the forums, and read reviews on parts.

Welcome. Best advice to give is Lurk, and then lurk some more. If you are interested in a product typing _____ vs (putting whatever you are looking at in the blank there) will bring up popular comparisons. Honestly the reading and the searching for the part is probably more fun than owning it for me.

Thank you all for the hospitality. So It seems like it all comes down to the motherboard then. But if the motherboards provide the same slots, why are some motherboards more expensive than others?

And do all motherboards generally fit any case?

Because the onboard chips that are all over the motherboard and the electrical design is not the same for all motherboards. Also more expensive motherboards have more of these "slots". If you want to overclock you need a motherboard with good circuitry (which doesn't mean that you have to get the most expensive ones at all).

There are different sizes. The most standard one for desktops is ATX (7/8 PCI slots on the case), but if you don't need loads of PCI devices µATX (micro-ATX) saves a bit of space and money.

If you want help in choosing your parts you should start a new thread with your budget and how you're gonna use your future computer.
