Picking out some new radiator fans, need advice...

Hi all,

I'm in the process of ordering components so I can transfer all my gear from my HAF-X over to my new 900D, and I cant make up my mind on which set of fans to get for the x2 480 Alphacool UT60 rads I will be purchasing.

I plan on having my 900D build silence orientated with a black/red color scheme, both UT60s are going to be running in a push config with a total of 8 fans that are going to be hooked up to a fan controller (aquacomputer aquero 5 pro). At system idle, the lower radiator will be passively cooling with its 4 fans shut off, and the upper radiator will have its 4 fans running at around 60-75% of full RPM. At full system load, the lower radiator fans will kick on and all 8 rad fans will be running at near max RPM.

I'm stuck between purchasing the Corsair SP120 quiet edition fans...

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16044/fan-996/Corsair_Air_Series_SP120_Quiet_Edition_High_Static_Pressure_120mm_Fan_CO-9050005-WW.html?tl=g36c15s60#blank

Or preferably going with the Bitfenix Spectre PRO 120mm red led fans...

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14438/fan-928/BitFenix_Spectre_Pro_120mm_Fan_-_Red_LED_BFF-LPRO-12025R-RP.html#blank

I was wondering if there are any other LED alternatives that offer decent static pressure at a low db rating?

I have looked at the line up of Gentle Typhoons, and although they are the #1 fan when it comes to performance vs silence, they really aren't aesthetically pleasing IMHO.

Any input and or advice is certainly welcome! thumb.gif

Bitfenix Spectre PRO fans arn't designed for radiators so i don't recommend those.

I have Corsair SP120 fans on my H100 radiator and they are excellent, can't hear them atall and they still perform well.

I know you don't find them aesthetically pleasing but you could look at the AP-15 or the AP-14 (1450RPM) which are also great fans. The AP-15 isn't silent, but you can turn it down a little and its a great fan. I have mine running at 1400RPM and they are very quiet. I sprayed the fan blades blue on mine so they do look nicer!

I'm actually going for an almost identical build, but I'll be putting both UT60's into push/pull for a total of 16 fans. From what I've read, the difference between the GT's and the SP's is negligible enough that you should just go with whichever you prefer. The GT's are slightly louder (Audible as opposed to silent) and as you said aren't much to look at, but have a slight lead in performance. They also have a strange pitch to them if you undervolt them too far. Considering I'm going to be using so many fans I'm going for the SP's daisy chained to these.

I figured the Bitfenix pros weren't designed for specific radiator use, i just wasn't sure on how well they would perform, I was comparing the specs between the two and seen that they both have large style blades and similar static pressure ratings (the bitfenix looks like it may have a more aggressive blade pitch than the SPs giving it the higher CFM rating).

however that GT fan looks sharp! did painting it throw it out of balance? Also how did you remove the fan blade assembly from the armature?

Nice build btw thumb.gif

You need to keep starting and running amps in mind , which will determine how many you can put on each channel of your controller. 8 gt ap15's are just under 35 watts on start up. And much less running. I believe this is where the GTs really make a difference considering you would want 1 rad on a channel.

I bought about 5 or 6 different fans suitable for radiators and i did find AP-15's to be the best performing but the SP120 the best for noise vs performance. I cant stand the pitch of the AP-15's at full speed with airflow through mesh as it whistles but at 1400RPM they are ideal. I love how quiet the SP120's are at full speed, you cant hear a thing.

Fans i tried and tested:

Corsair SP120
Corsair AF120
BeQuiet! Silent Wings 2
Akasa Pirahna
Gentle Typhoon AP-15
Arctic F12

The AP-15 was very easy to take apart, just take the sticker off in the middle, unhook the retention ring off the back and pull the fan blades off. Was super easy. I suggest putting the fan into a clear sanwhich bag whilst undoing the clip on the back as i didnt and it pinged off and never found it!

Nope hasnt been thrown off balance, it works exactlly as it did before. Many thin layers of paint, about 40mins apart did the trick well.

Also if your not already, make sure you join the 600T club, the people in there are EXCELLENT, there's nothing that hasn't been done on the 600T in the forum! They will give you advice on fans too.

One of my friends owns an aquero 5 pro, it has four channels (and supposedly expandable up to 10) and from what i can tell I can assign 2 fans per channel and have 2 channels linked up to one temperature probe or other temperature input via the aquero software. hopefully that will distribute the amperage load on the actual controller.

I also intend on installing this to help keep the aquero from overheating.

Hopefully it will work out biggrin.gif

Ive pulled the trigger on the SP120 quiet fans, thanks for your advice!

lol, I assume that on the back of the ap-15 has one of those E clips? I couldn't tell you how many times Ive popped those off on some of my RC models only to have them land on the carpet never be found again. I would have never guessed that painting the ap-15s would turn out so well, +rep thumb.gif
