Possible to play games at 2560x1080 on a 2560x1440 monitor?

Yeah, sounds a bit strange I know...

But I saw this video on YouTube of a guy playing BF3 on a 2560x1080 native monitor and I just think it looks fantastic.

The 21:9 aspect ratio makes for a very dramatic picture. 21:9 comes very close to the aspect ratio movies are shot in, so the cinematic feel makes sense. I want a gaming experience that makes me feel like I'm the main character in a movie, I guess... There's just something about it. Also, that video is ridiculously high quality (I'm talking smoothness, details, and colors, not just the high resolution upload), so even if you have nothing to share here, you should still watch it! thumb.gif

But I don't want a 2560x1080 monitor. I want a 2560x1440 monitor for everyday use and "normal" gaming, and then I want to be able to choose 2560x1080 resolution in certain games where I think it would be enjoyable. Is this possible?

The black bars won't bother me one bit. I mean, I watched that video on my 1920x1080 monitor and didn't mind. In fact, I think having the solid black bars on the top and bottom give the illusion of higher contrast... Perhaps not actual contrast, but who cares as long as it's perceived anyways?

I have an ASUS GTX 780 Direct CU II, so I should be set in terms of GPU strength.

Should work. You might have to adjust some settings so it doesn't stretch the image to fit. If you maintain aspect ratio, you'll have black bars on top and bottom.

Just for an example, will the settings menu in Battlefield 3 have an option to play at 2560x1080 if I'm using a 2560x1440 screen? Or do I have to have a native 2560x1080 screen to have that option show up?

Load it up and try it?

Some games you have to select an aspect ratio and then a resolution.

Well I don't have a 1440p monitor, that's the problem! Which is why I'm asking around before I decide to buy one.

if the game dosent have settings for 2560*1080 you can just create a custom resolution inside the nvidia control panel / catayst control center. will work no problems.

So I'm a little late to this, but yes it works perfectly fine on my Qnix QX2710! I've messed around with 2560x720 and 2560x480 just to see how dual and triple monitor setups would look like. It made it easy to see the difference, but at that point the game is just too small on the screen. 2560x1080 is just right though (:
