New Home-Built PC: Power Issue and No Display

Brand new parts, and I just finished building it today, but when I turn it on, it lights up (all the fans start moving and whatnot), but after awhile everything will go dark, the fans will stop, and then everything picks back up again. This seems to be continuously happening with no consistent time interval between shut-offs and turn-ons.

On top of this, when I plug it into my monitor (which I've used only a couple days ago on a different computer) and turn it on, nothing happens. I've tried all the simple suggestions I've seen on other posts, like moving the memory around and making sure everything's plugged in tight, and using both the graphics card and motherboard DVI ports, but no luck there.

This is my first post here so if I'm doing posting somewhere wrong please tell/move me. Any suggestions with regards to my predicament would be greatly appreciated. I'll try to include any necessary component information below. Thanks a lot.

PSU: Seasonic 550W

Sounds like it could be a bad motherboard.

The screen does nothing at all? Normally if it is the ram or other component you will get at least the bios screen.

Nope just a box from the monitor bouncing around telling me to "Check Signal Cable."
Although with regards to the Motherboard, when I was initially just at the stage of trying to get it to turn on, I pressed the power button and had some cables for the case fans mixed up or something, which resulted in a loud popping noise and smoke coming out of I don't know where (very possibly the Motherboard).
