It doesn't take anything to loo look 'fantastic' these days. People have forgotten the rate of progression we had in the ~first half of the 00s. You and I probably compare every new game to a projection of '2013 graphics' that we imagined in 2005 (or based of Far Cry -> Crysis caliber leaps) . Most people's standards fluctuate with the times, and now any small step is huge improvement to them. Hell, just look at the consumer PC monitor market to see how people lap up backwards rubbish, accepting it as next gen.
Haha, that's the old 'Gamebryo' screenshot trick isn't it.
Mouse and keyboard on the couch is absolutely NOT an issue. All it takes is one of those lightweight lap tables, and you end up with an even better posture than most people have at a desk. Wires are also a non issue - most people are using wireless anyway, and even a cheap wireless mouse is still a vastly superior input device to a gamepad. I even used wired with minimal annoyance.
Now using TVs as monitors... that's a whole other can of worms. Even without considering refresh rates above 60Hz, 80% of TVs are what I'd consider thoroughly unsuitable for PC gaming.
