Thread Starter
PC used to game on has a i5-3470 @ 4.0 and 4 gig RAM. Is it worth upgrading to 8gig, selling the 4gig and be out maybe $25-30? Currently using 2 x 2 crucial ballistix @ 1333

You can do with 4gb, though it will be a bit on the edge. Open task-manager and see how much you are using during habital usage. Personally I find myself using about 3gb when I'm not really doing anythiing. Just Spotify, maybe a browser, skype running in the background etc. Having too little ram will result in writing and reading off the hard-drive instead, which is obviously much, much slower. Ram is still pretty cheap, so I see no reason not to get a new couple of sticks thumb.gif

Go for 8GB; made big a difference for me in games like BF3.

I find I sometimes use 10GB just doing normal things, which include one or two VM's, Opera and FF using 1.5-2GB each (60 tabs biggrin.gif) and maybe playing a game. It all depends on your usage. My laptop on the other hand has 4GB and it's more than enough because it simply lacks the power to do what I do on my PC.

I would say get the 8GB, and upgrade to 1600mhz if you can.

I have tried to use more than 4gb while gaming, and it is not easy. I hooked up two monitors to my GTX 580, put skyrim (maxed I believe, but no texture packs or anything) on the main screen, a 2560x1600 monitor. Then on the other screen I opened like 5 tabs of google chrome (facebook, twitter, youtube, gmail, and my school website), played music using WMP, and ran raptr. still didn't hit 4GB. Got close, though.

Despite that, I would say get 8GB of decently quick memory for a gaming rig. 4GB would be my recommendation for a budget work PC (outlook, web access, the usual) as they would be hard pressed to get to that point.

edit: this is on windows 8, loaded on a SSD, i5 3570k

You will only get close with 4gb. Get 8gb and do the same test and you will def. be over 4gb.
