[GS] Epic: Graphics indistinguishable from reality in 10 years - Page 4

In just 10 years. Not going to happen. Even CGI in movies as good as they are is still clearly CGI and not real footage. And thous require huge render farms and months of render time.

Lets look at this for a second.

Final Fantasy: The spirits within was made 12 years ago and real time graphics are still not as good. They come pretty close in some areas but as a whole they are still behind.




Then lets look at Avatar form 2009



This is leaps and bounds better then anything real time. I find it really hard to believe that we could see this level of detail in games just 10 years from now. And again this is still clearly CGI and very much distinguishable form reality.

You're not taking into account parallel processing. Once the industry is dragged kicking and screaming into programming for things like OpenCL, visuals will take their first revolutionary jump since the intorduction of the Voodoo. Much as I hate to admit it, the multicore consoles insure this will happen.

If you are going to give me "real", there are requirements, that have never been met.

1. Real water. Let's see water that doesn't have straight lines when in contact with land. Water should mold to the surface. It needs to be a higher resolution. And realistic effect from splash and currents and waterfalls. Right now, I think Skyrim is winning this. Still see the fake, of course, but they are on the right track.
2. Real Sky Let's see clouds that move. And carry rain. And lightning. All of it.
3. Real Vegetation and soil Good luck with this one. Dirt digs up plants, plants have roots, bees in the flowers, petals falling, dandelion seeds, etc etc, uneven grass, NOT TILED.
4. Real trees Acorns, etc. Seeds falling from trees. Individual leaves. Individual Needles. Bark.

And I think the hardest of all will be animals. Animals poop, ok? I have played games for YEARS and NEVER had my horse stop to poop, or just poop. No fecal matter in ALL of Skyrim and Cyrodiil. Need feces and flies.
