Fan control problem

Thread Starter
I have 6 Prolimatech Vortex 140mm fans running off the fan controller, 3 on one channel and 3 on another Tonight I noticed that three of the fans running off one channel of the controller were constant @ full speed. The temp sensor and controller were working properly. The fans are connected by splitter cable so it was easy to figure out which fan is causing the problem. If I unplug that fan the other two will run according to the settings of the fan controller. My question is if the fan stopped reading or sending a rpm signal then it should run @ full speed right? And any other fan that is connected to that splitter should experience the same because basically that signal wire would be acting the same across the board right? I haven't taken the fan apart yet because it is in a difficult area to remove in the case but has anyone dealt with anything like this before? I don't know if I should go ahead and purchase a new fan yet or not. I am a good electronics technician so maybe this is something I can repair. These fans cost $30 each and shipping would make it about $40. that's $40 I don't want to spend right now.

If you switch the fans to the opposite channels on the controller does the problem move too, or is the same fan still bad?

Yea, the problem follows that one fan. I tried it on different channels and I had no ability to lower the speed from 100%.

Ok, if you hook up the "bad" fan by itself will the controller control it?

As for a repair, not likely.

I plugged the fan into a 12v Molex so it runs by itself and doesn't affect the other two which the controller controls based on temperatures. I will get a replacement fan but for the time being at least it will still blow air through the rad.
