No, not the .exe files, but the unzipped ones.

Exactly. But which driver. And the ones on the Dell website are all for XP (using the Service Tag) - because that is what was originally installed on his PC. So I guess I need to find the equivalent ones for 7, if they even exist.

That's the thing with prebuilts, they're stubborn like that. If the computer was meant to have XP then that's probably how Dell has made it.
Had the computer come with Windows Vista out of th box, you might have been able to install Win7 in theory.
One thing you could do, if your mate wants his Dell up and running with Win7 (and not XP) is you could buy another motherboard that takes the same CPU, RAM, etc...from a brand like Gigabyte or Asus and swap them over. At least then you'll have a more open BIOS and more features too.

That's not a bad idea! Hadn't even thought of that. I'll check what is compatible and pitch it to him. Otherwise he'll likely be stuck with XP.

Im guessing it's like around 6+ years old being an XP machine? If it's Intel it's most likely an LGA1155 or a Socket 478 if it's even older. Those boards are cheaper these days.
Check ebay for a second hand one and make sure it takes the same CPU and RAM, cos a brand new LGA775 can still cost $65+ retail despite it's age.
