Need a decent 5.1 setup for everything

Thread Starter
I use my PC for gaming(priority)/movies/music and have the Z5500 since 2005 as my primary listening set, and after reading through the threads here I realized I could do a lot better than a prebuilt system. But it seems 5.1 setups are a bit expensive.

I play FPS competitively (or try to) and would like to maintain that sensation of knowing when someone is behind me on either side.

Budget is around 1K US$ but flexible. Buying locally so only big names are available (Sony, Philips, Pioneer, Bose, Infinity & Onkyo, I could look for others based on recommendations)

Could I get a decent 5.1 setup (including receiver) from such big corporate names without selling my testies?

I just want something better than my current setup.

Cheers.

Buy some used speakers & a used reciever that supports 5.1 surround sound (Harmon/Kardon avr 3300 is great biggrin.gif) Thats most likely going to be cheaper than buying new stuff, you will get more sound for less money. thumb.gif

Thx.

So if I understood you correctly, the quality of the sound is mainly from the receiver and I could use almost any decent speakers to go with it, and that would sound a lot better than the Z5500?

So all I need is a decent receiver and sub ?

Pretty much smile.gif I payed 950$ for my setup, ill post pics in 10 min or so, + I think I got ribbed off, and no you dont need a sub, you can use your current from your z5500, thats what I did smile.gif Since the sub from that setup is pretty sweet.

Check the pics, thats what I got for $950, its overkill tho smile.gif You could go with some way smaller speakers and still get good sound, if you decide to buy used speakers local, bring a friend with you that knows some about speakers, just to make sure they are okay. thumb.gif
