[Kitguru] - Valve due in court over refusal to allow resale of digital games - Page 47

Wow, i thought the whole losing steam sales was bad enough. I had not even considered the DLC nightmare this would cause.
so consumer protection agencies are KKK because they protect consumers... well i am getting more and more surprised by what you guys produce in this topic.

also to the nice man from Netherlands. i remember as 5-7 years ago we in eastern europe have been paying 5-7 times more on phone bills/internet unlike you westerners, we even had data plans on fixed line internet while you in west had flat rates. so please dont tell me how bad is EU regulation for customers, because while our wages were fragments of yours, we were paying phone bills at 10-20% of our income, and we would still, if it wasnt for. regulation by EU commission. even now our phone bill/internet rates are 20-30% higher than what you pay in western europe ...

This thread is full stupid. It's become pandering to big business because people actually believe companies like Valve are going to abandon their core business model just because they have to allow someone to transfer a licence.

But it isn't Valve that decides to put games up on sales. The publisher/developers themselve apply for the sales. So while Valve might not want to drop their heavy discount strategy the developers might want to.

They won't.

Know why?

Because the reason they discount in the first place is because sales of that game have stagnated and they want to boost them short term.

they will have to compete with people who are selling second hand games. so no the steam sales will remain or you will get your steam game not for 50% of but for 60% and not on summer or winter sales but through the entire year

You're correct for once. The other reason for discounts is to boost hype in the weeks leading up to sequels. Prices won't go up, they'll probably actually go down for the "base" game, only the prevalence and necessity of DLC, freemium, and subscriptions will skyrocket in response.

Win or lose, Valve isn't severely effected since they're far more retailer than developer these days. It's the people actually creating and funding the content that makes it onto Steam that will be the losers, and them losing is going to translate to a loss for the end user as well. Cutting off the nose to spite the face or pyrrhic victory, your choice on which way to put it, but both apply to any situation that sees Valve lose this case.

The second hand market doesn't hurt developers or publishers because they aren't even in the transaction and they shouldn't be. They have already been paid for that copy. It would be double dipping if developers want a piece of the second hand market.
It maybe blocked now but it may be subjected to change in the near future...

Yes, the second hand market does hurt developers and yes, there is something wrong with you selling a game used.

1. Did you get to enjoy the game to it's fullest as much as you wanted?...yes
2. Did the person you sold it to get to enjoy the game to it's fullest as much as they wanted to?....yes (and this could go on forever)

Who's time and effort went into making the game?...the developers.

Please explain to me how it's fair that 2 people got to enjoy their hard work yet only one person compensated them for it.

How would you like it if you spent thousands of hours on a product and sold it to one person......then all of the sudden you found out that 10 more people used your product to it's fullest....yet you didn't get a penny for it?

You'd hate it and you'd despise those who were screwing you out of what you rightfully earned, to be compensated for your hard work.

Because it's NOT THE SAME THING. Tv's, cars, processors, all degrade in their physical condition. Games do not (discs or digital).

The fact that you can't see this is mind boggling.

If you can't get it based on what I wrote just above, then you're just not smart enough to get it and there's no sense trying to explain it further.
