You don't actually need an optical drive, there's a wide spectrum of utilities that will turn your USB thumb drive into a bootable drive.
Should the need for an optical drive arise (say, you need to fetch data from a cd/dvd given to you), you might get yourself an external, usb optical drive.edit 1:
