As another folder, here and on [H], AndyE, said...stick to a low end CPU, a Celeron for example, get a mobo with 2-3 x16 slots, put about 4GB ram on the board, buy a decent PSU to support 2-3 cards (~750-850), get a 64GB SSD, and then buy good GPUs, OC them and fold the heck out of them on the new advanced Core-17s.

I own a 2P Asus board...I wouldn't recommend it for folding. I have 6124HE's on it, but w/o the ocng utility that's unique to SuperMicro 4P boards, it's not worth it. Even with 62xx chips, it wouldn't be worth the cost of the board, chips, and PSU to support them....even with the TPC (Turion Power Control) utility available.

If you want to go whole hog...buy a 4P board, 4x 61xx chips, a 32GB DDR3, a 1200W PSU, an SSD, and lots of fans...then fold. You can do this for about high $1k or low $2k and get the most bang for your buck.

But overall, stick with the cheap chips, board, and good GPUs.

Thanks for the input. I've had a long interest in 4P folding and from several reviews people mentioned just how high of a PPD (+200k) they could get with those 61XX Opterons.

I think on the EVGA forums they talked about power consumption of a typical Magny-Cours 4P being around 400 watts at load. Getting over 200,000 PPD at 400 watts sounded like a miracle to me.

It would be even more so with Xeons but those are just so much more expensive.

Ehhhh.....not exactly, im a 2p folder myself, and for the budget route its stupid, you get older hardware that if it can finish a bigadv unit, probably wont finish the newer ones (IE the 2x octo's from AMD ....) meaning you will need to go 4p on the AMD side, on the intel side two 1366 Hex cores at just shy of 3.0 Ghz are needed to complete a 8101 in time, and at that it pulls 110k PPD (see my sig for specs), and pulls a hell of alot more than a single GPU would (as system total...), also no that is nto the reason most 4p folders do not get a case, alot over at [H] also have cases, not just naked systems.

Most people with 4P rigs don't get cases because of the size of their motherboards.

Exactly as scuba says, if your going for multi CPU, go all out, dont go for the cheapest one you can find (unless ofc it is a great sale somewhere on stuff that should sell higher....), keep to the lower end CPU, with a decent mobo / PSU, to feed the GPUs. If you want to jump on a chat with me send me a PM and ill tell ya how you can get ahold of me (dont know if i can shoot out channels for IRC on this board...)

My 6176SE pulls 750W (SSD, 64GB DDR3, 12 fans) and my E5-4650, same setup for the most part, pulls 800W.

I haven't put my 6166HE on the meter yet, but when I get around to putting my "kill-a-watt" on the system, I'll let you know.

For 500$ just get the oldest used pc that will support pci 2.0 x 16. Then stick in a decent PSU and then the most expensive GPU money can buy. That is budget.
For 500 you don't need multiple slots or anything. Just a body to fit a decent GPU in.

If you want to fold 24/7 for OC.net perhaps some other folders have old crap laying around. You can just put those 500$ towards a PSU and one GPU and run it.

I think he meant "PCIe 2.0"...
