Can i replace my desktops graphics card with a more powerful one to play games like WoW and Rift. - Page 3

Maybe the 7750 or something older but do not spend too much because if it's just for WoW it's not worth it at all, moreover your bit old CPU could be a bottleneck for it.
Instead, in case you plan to upgrade your whole system in a near future pick any you like, still there will be new ones tongue.gif

In the graphic settings shadows got their huge slice of the cake and by simply turning them off you can gain quite some fps.
Even the addons, those might have a huge impact on your gameplay and fps so be careful with them. If you want, there are addons that allow you check cpu and memory usage for each loaded addon.

Here I run WoW on a old Sapphire HD 4850 Toxic (Ati) and so far I've some fps drops only in 40m raids (world pve eg. Oondasta) if I've all the addons enabled.
Playing it as healer it's crucial for me to have quick responses from the interface so I can't play it with all the settings at max to avoid sudden fps drops but if you allow me, in my opinion, it's just WoW's old and not well performing gfx engine.

Rcently I've discovered Tera, it has way better graphic, lots more of polygons and I can play it at max settings in a crowded area, it still is very fluid -.-'. After a little experience with it I was and I still am very amazed of how it runs on my computer compared to WoW -.-'
Tera is so far behind WoW in terms of optimization I am speechless.
You can run WoW on a fairly old machine and get fluid gameplay out of it.
However, with Tera, I cycled from all the 6 Video settings presets and I always had two CPU threads pegged at 100% (4.5GHz atm) with my GPU downclocking to about 850MHz and occasionally spiking up to 60% GPU time; averaging about 40-45%. And the FPS was mediocre, I expected more. If I were shooting for 30FPS, I would be super satisfied, but not being able to cap 60 just because of the CPU is sad. Especially considering this is a relatively high clock (in the masses of general gamers).
I am not impressed. Yes, it looks better, but WoW's engine is very well designed and optimized.

OT: back in the 2004 when WoW was released and given the nature of the game it made sense to make a game where people with an old system could have played it but currently we're in the 2013 and it's actually pointless to keep that marketing strategy since there have been quite some progress and people hopefully upgraded their 2004 or before systems.
Tera is indeed younger and maybe not yet well optimized but at least it's not almost 10 years old and WoW could really use a whole restyling which is not going to happen because "they are busy with their new mmo" but it's Blizzard we're talking about so I'll believe this only when I'll see it wink.gif

Rumour #1 says they're working on a game that will make-up for the fail D3 is/was.
Rumour #2 says they're working on a D3 expansion.

Anyhow, I would like to see Rift being optimized. Might give it another try then; the grindfest was almost a turn-down but the poor performance really drove me off.

Also, you would be surprised of how many people still play WoW on low-end systems. And furthermore, due to (I would say mostly) the average player's age, a lot of clients are ran from laptops, which obviously don't have the processing power to match a desktop system.
Not to mention that a whole engine remake for World of Warcraft would be pointless since the game is well past its golden age; it would be super expensive and inefficient. The improvements they have already made with all the shaders, particles, flares, sunshafts, anti-aliasing, etc, etc. along with the implementation of DefectX 11 make up for a really good view of the game. And WoW has never been about photo-realism anyway.

Yeah for questing a P3 computer could run WoW at launch.

40 mans? Forget it. Sure in MC you could afk in the corner and auto attack as a hunter. When it came down to actual raids that required coordination like AQ40+ you needed a decent PC.

Same for now. You can quest in the low level zones on a C2D with a 8800GT on low settings. Doing 25 mans, especially fights like Elgalon or Lei Shen you won't get more than 5 FPS. Every expansion blizzard tries to polish the graphics. BC had much further view distance and higher resolution textures. LK had shadows that still kill high end cards with higher resolution textures. Cataclysm had a complete revamp of the graphics engine and gave us high quality water and sunshafts, while supporting a DX11 and 64bit mode. MoP offered DX11 features like SSAO.

Graphically for the art style WoW is a good looking game, and runs alright as far as MMOs go. Most serious guilds will ask about computer specs in the application process because they don't want your lag becoming a liability. Thats why I suggest that OP should replace their PC with something a bit more powerful. If you were to go to a forum that covers MMOs more they would suggest the same thing to you.

And titan wasn't canceled. Its being re-done from the ground up. Blizzard does this to a lot of their games including WC3.

Um no. He can drop in a 6670/5670 for cheap and aside from an apu solution nothing without a dedicated card will play as smooth. Processing power yes but not graphics. A 6670 is only like 70 bucks and will be a huge huge upgrade for the op. Id say pop one in and run it till you can build a system you really want. Then retire this comp to an htpc and enjoy buttery smooth 1080p playback.
