Need help setting up 2.1

Thread Starter
I'm setting up my 2.1 and I cannot get my soundcard to recognize 2.1, it only shows 2.0. The sound card manual says to feed the signal to the sub and use the sub out to feed the speakers but I'm running an amp for my bookshelves. How do I do this? The only thing I can think of would be to use a 3.5mm splitter. I tried plugging the sub to the Center / Sub port but it does not work.

Polk Audio Monitor 30's
Dayton DTA-100A
Dayton Audio 10" Sub
ASUS Xonar DG

I have my Line out going to the amp and feeding the bookshelves. I cannot get a signal to the sub.

Look at the back of your sub. It should have ports for High-Level Input and Output. Hook it up like this:

Sound card > Amp > Sub Hi IN

Sub Hi OUT > Bookshelves

And the sub will pass through the power from the amp? It seems to me you would want the amp feeding the bookshelves directly.

First, does the amp have a separate line out? Second, does the sub have a crossover frequency dial? If yes for both, then just plug the line out from the amp to the sub (not the pre-amp), and adjust the crossover frequency of the sub to complement the bookshelf speakers. So like this:

1.) Xonar DG > Amp > line out > sub

2.) Amp > amplified output > bookshelf speakers

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. thumb.gif

Edit: Upon further research, Firehawk's method should work.

It does not have a line out on the amp. I know his method will work and I'll probably go that route but I want to make sure that running from the amp to the sub then to the bookshelves will not interfere with anything. Will the volume still be controlled by the amp, etc.

It won't interfere with anything, its designed to be run like that. You'll only need to adjust the crossover frequency and gain to suit your setup. Volume will still be controlled by the amp.
