Best GPU for 1440p Gaming? - Page 3

Came from Crossfire HD 7950's to a single GTX 780. the 780 is a much nicer gaming experience. smooth as silk. Go for the best deal you can find on a GTX 780 imho.

not sure. based on my experience, when i had crossfire (7950/7970) it was a little laggy with my chip at 4.5GHz HT off. Turned HT on helped but even then my chip was not able to push both gpus to 100% usage.

No way that 7950's would be bottlenecked from a 2500k. That was never the issue anyway. It was the Damn microstutter and driver crashes. Still present in all crossfire setups even today!

sorry about your experience. mine lagged but went away with the chip oc'ed and ht on. like i said, that was my experience. never had microstutter issue that i noticed but, then again, i only played BF3, C3, and C2. i've read other games like skyrim causes problems.

btw, i did not even synch or use radeonpro (whatever that is called) when i crossfired.

one 7950 is about equal to 2 6950s. you had 4 6950s in your system.

edit: may i add that Valley was a stutter fest with my crossfire.

I think a major point has gone over people's head. The 2500k was an i5 and it did not have HT. So you must be referring to the i7 2600k.

Exactly. I have a 2500k OC'ed to 4.5ghz. I had two Sapphire Toxic 6950's (both unlocked to 6970's) in CF and I had a ton of driver issues/microstutter/negative impacts on fps. Decided to go with a 7970 and I've been fine since. Zero problems.

Although, I'm selling my 7970 to get a 780. It's a pretty frivolous purchase for most people (even I feel sort of bad about it) but anything that will help me push more fps to get more use out of 120hz at 1440p. Plus from my limited experience, playing on my 660m on my laptop and getting 30-40 fps in games like Skyrim and Guild Wars 2 feel as smooth as getting 50-60 with my 7970, so I'm wondering if frame latency overall is better on Nvidia cards, or if it depends on the game. I'm not biased to Nvidia, it's the first Nvidia GPU I've ever owned. So I'm excited to give the 780 a try and see how it feels compared to my 7970. Not to see if it gets more fps, sometimes they are two different things and it's obvious the 780 will get more.
