Gaming laptop: Is 17" worth it? - Page 2

I've used everything from a 10.1" Netbook to my 17.3" ASUS G750, with a bunch of 13-14-15 inch laptops in between. I can tell you it boils down to two things:

- If you're going to be toting the machine around in a backpack or shoulder bag until you get where you're going, then set it up on a table top -- size and weight don't matter. Get the best hardware you can afford, and if you prefer to run at 1920x1080 resolution - you probably want a 17.3" to do the job. Cooler running, larger keyboard with a numeric key pad and dedicated arrow keys, etc.

- If you're going to be toting the machine between classes, actually use it as a "lap top" computer in the living room, take it to the coffee shop or McDonalds for lunch and mooch the Wi-Fi, etc., then you probably want an Ultrabook sized 13" or 14" machine. Light weight, easier portability, better battery life, are all important factors if you're truly mobile in your lifestyle. Downside is, graphics performance usually stinks on these class machines as they don't have dedicated graphics discreet graphics chipsets.

- That leaves the 15.4-15.6" class machines. You can get decent graphics options, decent screen resolutions, and a reasonable compromise in system size, weight, and battery life. Lots of machines fall in this category, my favorite current machine is probably the Lenovo Y500 series. Decent price, good graphics options, reasonable size.

I'm running a ASUs G750JX right now for my gaming / office mobile platform, and I LOVE it. GTX 770M is plenty of graphics for my needs, 24 GB RAM lets me run several virtual machines for work purposes, and two HDD bays. That, and a really nice matte finish Full HD 1080p display. But, it's a full-sized 17.3" notebook.

Wow, That Sager is a really good deal for the base system. Thanks for the link. I think I might wait a month or so before I make my final purchase, but that looks pretty good.
