Custom pfsense router build - Page 2

Don't have much to add besides that I use some old Intel CPU for mine and single user VPN works fine. I think the CPU is around socket 478 era.

Another option is a 1U Atom barebones server: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101364

This is a D525 Atom.

I've seen it, but I'm a bit concerned about the few review saying it can heat up quite a bit which is why I'd like to avoid a 1U case, just to be on the safe side.

If I decide not to wait, my best option so far is to try to recreate it in the 2U case I mentioned earlier with 2x 2GB RAM stick.

It's not like I need to upgrade it(unless my current CPU won't be able to handle a VPN with 3 person once I set it up properly) so I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet

I've been using the 1U SuperMicro 5015A-H as my pfSense box since '09 and have had no issues with heat or overheating. Not sure where these claims are coming from. Maybe they are sticking those 1U boxes in a cramped closet or space with little or no airflow.

That's reassuring to hear, I may get tempted and buy one. You always have to take newegg's review with a grain of salt since it's not always someone who knows what he's doing.

If that's a concern... just stick another fan on it!

Atoms are made to be in tight enclosures and higher temps... I wouldn't worry about it. Especially if it is from a server company like Supermicro.
