Sudden decrease in TEMP on HD 6870, now it's hot again.

Hello, I bought a new heat sink for my CPU a few days back (Xigmatek Dark Knight II Black Hawk Edition) installed it and everything went fine.

I took out my GPU while I was doing to get a little more hand space (I have a mid-tower) and when I put it back in my GPU temps were around 36 degrees Celsius idle, where they are normally 50 degrees Celsius, and It wasn't a miss-connection on the card and the program not being able to read it because I put my hand by the one of the side vents and it was very cool. I didn't know what had happened, but after I realized that my heat sink was up against my RAM and I went to position it over a bit (I removed the GPU again for hand space) the temps were back up to around 50 degrees Celsius.

Is there anything I should check to see why I'm not getting those temps?

Note:
The card was not underclocked, says MSI Afterburner and the Catelyst Control Panel
I have screws holding the card in place, not the plastic tabs on the case itself

Thanks for all your suggestions, I hope I can come to a resolution.

Cheers!

Not really sure why this would happen. have you dusted off the fan and heatsink? When was the last time you reapplied your thermal paste? Those would be the first two things I would check.

When I had my computer apart for the heatsink installation I cleaned everything, that was also when I re-applied the thermal paste with my personal favorite, Arctic Silver 5. The heatsink re-positioning was done 30 minutes after the initial installation and that was when my temps went back up to the normal 50. 50 is fine for this card as that is quite cool, the 6870's tend to run very hot but I am just at a loss as to why it had such better temps for that one time.

My 6870 idles at 38 and has only broken 70 twice during the summer.

Did you clean the GPU core properly with some type of isopropyl rubbing alcohol or something like that before you applied the new AS5?

Given that AS5 has a cure time, you may want to take that into consideration. Also, there are much better non-conductive thermal compounds on the market now than AS5. You may wan to start there.
