Playing it for the first time nowadays would make it seem like a average shooter. Keep in mind this game came out in 1998. So back then it was revolutionary. The story line and game mechanics/ physics was beyond what other games have achieved at that time.
As to the people saying it has not aged well, that's a matter of opinion. Ask people if they have heard of half life and most say yes even if they haven't played it. The same cant be said for most other games of that era on PC.
Most people have also heard of utter disasters like bigrigs, bmxxx, etc. Every single gamer ever has heard of CoD. Fame =/= relative quality.
I personally don't think the game aged well at all. There are plenty of other same-era games that I would much rather play now in 2013. Then again, I wasn't super crazy about it back in 1999 (when I first played it, hang me for playing it a year late) either.
It's just one of those games that is popular to praise, not because it is REALLY that "revolutionary" but because some big name people said
it was, and everyone nodded their head and and agreed, and perpetuated the popular notion without any real substance. It's not a BAD game though, so no one is really willing to say how overrated it is.
