[NSS] Half Life 3 coming late 2014 to PC and Console - Page 13

Dark forces has a huge amount of 2d objects and sprites.

It isn't really fair to compare to half Life as they focused on different things.

Half Life did use newer technologies but it also was a master of level design.

The mod seen stemming from half life is really what made the game so famous, it is tremendous even to this day.

Half-Life pioneered animating 3d models based on their skeletons. It was by far the best early example of using a video game to tell a story. It had undeniably the best enemy AI that had been seen at that point, with human soldiers that would flank, and toss grenades to flush you out to where they were waiting. It was absolutely worlds ahead of any single player experience that had come out up to that point.

How you can honestly compare an entirely-multiplayer online game like Tribes to Half-Life is beyond me. They're not even in the same league. Also, Dark Forces was hardly an advancement in any field. It was Doom with Star Wars textures. Same exact weapon mechanics, same exact find-keycard-or-switch-to-open-door level design, same 2D monster sprites with zero AI. If you loved Star Wars, you probably loved Dark Forces. If you didn't, well then it was the same as every other Doom clone, but with a nonsensical Space Opera plot.

My opinion, anyway.

Half-Life 2 did - so why can't this one?
I loved the Half Life series as much as the next guy but I'm just kind of over the whole HL3 thing. I'm sure it would be a good game but I just feel like if it comes out fine if it doesn't I don't much care at this point.
I was never all that impressed with Half-Life, yeah... I played it and never beat it too. It just wasn't a very exciting game to me. I don't know why people praise it so much... at the time Quake 3 was way more fun and you seen all the mods that came outta that ...WOOO just as many as the Half-Life communities.

This makes me doubt the whole thing. A Valve employee MAY forget to mention Linux since Valve hasn't had Linux support up and running for all that long(Portal 2 still isn't listed for regular download yet for instance), but I just doubt it. Not with as much fanfare as it's been getting from Valve lately. Maybe it's blind hope, but I get the feeling that GN wants to bring gaming on Linux up to the same level it is on Winblows, and I would expect that to bring a simultaneous release.

Agreed, Gabe definitely seems to be pushing Linux gaming way too much for it to simply be forgotten...I'd wager that we'll see some form of promotion for Linux with the launch of HL3.

As to the people saying it has not aged well, that's a matter of opinion. Ask people if they have heard of half life and most say yes even if they haven't played it. The same cant be said for most other games of that era on PC.

As Yahtzee said in one of his videos: "Funny how innovation in today's industry basically means catching up to Valve."

I personally don't think the game aged well at all. There are plenty of other same-era games that I would much rather play now in 2013. Then again, I wasn't super crazy about it back in 1999 (when I first played it, hang me for playing it a year late) either.

It's just one of those games that is popular to praise, not because it is REALLY that "revolutionary" but because some big name people said it was, and everyone nodded their head and and agreed, and perpetuated the popular notion without any real substance. It's not a BAD game though, so no one is really willing to say how overrated it is.

Just my 2c

Except when it came out, it was revolutionary...Look at the other FPS' that were out at the time: Unreal and Quake II among others, it was massive and completely changed the landscape...The reason it looks and feels bland now is because it was so damn good that everyone copied it, just like Thief 2 which pioneered with stealth mechanics and was great at the time but today it isn't anywhere nearly as good because everyone and their grandma made a mediocre copy of it.

If you play it today? Sure, it's not as good, it feels bland and just not that fun (Hence why I'm not playing through it but watching the Freemans Mind series) but then again, Doom and Quake aren't as fun today as they were back in the mid 90s either. Remember, 1998 was also the year we got the first English Pokemon games which just goes to show you how early along the game industry really was.

Not sure what your Doctor has prescribed you, but I certainly find L4D2, TF2, Portal 1 and 2, etc to not be "crap".

Obviously it's opinion, but by no means are their games crap even if they're not your style...It's like not respecting The Sims simply because each base game has set sales records regardless of overall quality.
