This is how I felt about HL2. I had a blast with HL1, easily one of the best games I've played. But two felt like it dropped the ball and tried to be too gimmicky. The platforming "puzzles" seemed to flow a ton better and show up at some of the most frustrating times. Nothing gets your heart racing faster than crawling across a tiny pipe above a giant pit of acid.
HL1 was and is brilliant. It was all about level design and like you said, puzzles.
HL2 I think was more about newer technology. Real Physics simulation, soft textures, more emphasis on characters, better gun fights.
It is hard to say if the HL1 story gameplay was better than HL2 because I think the HL2 characters were so much more involved.
HL1 you only had Barney to talk to on some rare occasions, otherwise you were completely alone, maybe a scientist or two.
I found them both excellent.
I just hope HL3 is less about the shooting and more puzzles and story
