modding laptop cooler

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I want to disassemble my weak sauce laptop cooler and mount two 120 fans on it. My question is that will my fans be overload (go kaaboom!) with the power that I supplied to it.

power supply 12 VDC, 1500 mA, by this I mean one of those phone charger with a bulky plugs
120 mm fans, 12 VDC 160 mA, 3pins
The two fans will be connected in parallel.

Thanks ahead,
X

No problem, if the adapter supplies 12V DC that's the juice computer fans like to drink.

Also being a 1.5A adapter you could connect NINE of those 0.16A fans and you'd still be within specs.

Is the "1.5 A" mentioned on the power supply means the limit of current in which that power supply can produce?

Yes. For instance this other adapter converts AC to 12V DC at a max of 5A, or 60W (12V x 5A = 60W) :

Okay, I get that it's capable of running the two fans. But that would make each fan getting 0.7 A, will that deteriorate the fans due to the high current?

It doesn't work that way smile.gif .

In simple words, the ampere rating of the adapter means 'how much current the adapter can give'. The ampere rating of the fan (or phone battery, or whatever you plug into the adapter) means 'how much current that individual fan asks for'.

If you plug one 0.16A fan to your adapter, that one fan will draw just 0.16A (at 12 volts).

If you plug two fans of 0.16A each, they will draw 0.16A + 0.16A = 0.32A total (each fan getting 12V when wired in parallel).

You plug three fans, 0.48A total (each fan getting 12V).

If you'd plug ten fans = 1.6A total. However this would be asking for more than the 1.5A adapter can safely give, and hence dangerous (risk of barbecued adapter).

You can think of your adapter as if it was a miniature computer power supply rated @ 18 watts max (1.5A x 12V = 18W). Each fan you plug will draw 1.92W (0.16A x 12V). Plug two fans, they'll draw 3.84W total, well below the 18W the adapter can give.
