depends on the company. Usually you get a referbished drive rather than new.

Sean which SSD would you recommend that doesnt suffer from this sort of problem, i.e just dying after so long. I read that the vertex 2 drives are succeptible, is this due to the Sandforce SF1200 controller?

I only need a small 40/60gb drive. I was thinking the crucial m4, but I need a drive that wont repeat this failure. My first vertex 2 drive that I bought died like this after less than a week!
My M4 in my dad's PC has been going strong for about 2 years now, along with my old one that i sold to my friend. If you can get one cheap it is a good drive.

Happened also w/ my Plextor M5Pro SSD today. Turned on my PC this morning and it didn't boot since it could find the OS, and after resetting to check the BIOS the drive also wasn't present. After a few tries of rebooting, it suddenly reappeared. Are there suspects as to why this would happen and if it can be prevented? Or perhaps is it common for some types of SSD, while not for others? It can be a nuisance especially when you need your PC immediately and have to guess or wait for a successful boot. Never happened w/ my HDDs.
