Opinions on upcoming Ivy Bridge-E/4930K in Sept "Longevity"

Looking to replace my AMAZING Gigabyte X58-ud5 rev 2 with the i7-930...

It's been a long time but I was wondering, do you guys see longevity in this like my current setup? I am wondering since in Q1 14 the 14nm chips will be released. Haswlel to me seemed more of a joke.

Thoughts, or should I be going X79?

Someone offered me this trade for around $200 for CPU / Mobo

i5-2500k @ 4.5Ghz w/ XPSC Raystorm(o/c on air or water?) On water very easily
Maximus V Extreme
4x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-1866

He wants another $100 or so for the ram.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade for $300? Basically I give $300 he gets my Ram / Mobo / CPU. What are your thoughts?

You still got another year in that thing IMO.

X79 is a good choice. IB-E will be socket compatible with a BIOS update. My guess is a 10% performance improvement over current 2011 CPUs clock for clock.

If you're itching to upgrade, go X79. You can't go wrong with X79. Q1 14 with 14nm is a long way away. Moore's law....

It's all about what YOU want. You don't *need* an upgrade.

You don't really need to upgrade the CPU if the most demanding thing you do is play games, if so you will be better off buying a new GPU or two, but I see you have titans so you can't get better tongue.gif . Don't get 3 it is not worth it two are still faster.

If you want to upgrade then x79 is great, but be sure to get a good board, Asus did the best on the x79 side of things. The deal on the ram could be better I think, you can get samsung 30nm for the same price and it will do 2133 easily on 2011 maybe more on ivy.

Bottom line you have two titans, so it looks like you have money to throw around thumb.gif . Do you want to fiddle with a new system? Or do you want to get it? If so live a little and get x79, it is much more fun to OC than anything on 1150 or 1155.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade for $300? Basically I give $300 he gets my Ram / Mobo / CPU. What are your thoughts?

Well, let's do an estimation real quick.

A 2500k goes for $200 used on Amazon.com still. A Maximus V Extreme goes for $200 still used off of Amazon.com too. That's $400 alone for the processor and motherboard. There are a few different Raystorm kits, so I would need more specifics on the exact model to price that out. We can estimate about $150 for that though (probably close). The memory is about $150 new, so $100 is not bad.

So you are totaling about $650 worth parts if you were to buy used everything yourself.

People still are trying to sell the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 for around $200-300 ($300 with 24GB of memory) on eBay, and an i7-930 runs for about $150 on Amazon.com. So your setup is worth about $350-400 used. So, processor and motherboard trading alone is almost equal trade. With the extra stuff like the Raystorm kit and the memory, only really adds another $250 or so. So if you can talk him down to $250 plus your setup for everything that would be a nice deal.

The 2500k setup will last you another 3 years easily I imagine. You aren't going X79 for $300. You could go X79 for $700 though (ASRock X79 Extreme6 - $219 + Intel Core i7-3930K used - $500 = $719). That would require you selling your components individually instead however and then adding a little more than $300 afterwards.
