Another SLI 580 to 780 thread?

Should I upgrade based upon my system specs or should I just wait to re-build my machine altogether?
Being a first gen i7 1366 motherboard and it's bottlenecked SATA 6GB ports, I can only take full advantage of faster SSD's...

Everything still works fine, but I do have that upgrade itch, as mostly everything on my system is 2-3 generations old...

Another thing for the GPU's is that my friend will be doing an engine replacement on my car, and as payment for labor, I will be giving him the two 580's(he usually doesn't accept cash).....

I was thinking of upgrading to the EVGA GTX 780 Classified, what do you all think?

extra question...
How much difference will it be since both 580 sandwiched air-cooled cards exhaust air, while the 780 classified seems to suck air into the case? - Heat rises onto my radiator of the H100 and the top fan is an exhaust, so will it raise the temp of my CPU considerably?

Depends on what you play now, and how much you play/want to play.

That i7-970 is still no slouch, and won't be outclassed for awhile. Think about it... if skylake brings another 5%-10% (after OC) improvement like ivy/haswell gave us, and if Steamroller/excavator finally catch up to where intel is... your i7-970 should be right behind some of the best CPUS 2 years from now! I wouldn't upgrade that.

As for the GPU, again, it's all about how much you really need it. Games aren't that demanding right now, so it wouldn't be that hard to sit on a used 7950 and wait for 20nm cards/future console games to come out. But if you're pretty OCD about framerates/settings, a 780 might be a good idea.

As for cooling, you have a full tower with 5+ fans. I wouldn't worry about a single CPU/GPU setup wink.gif

Thanks and +rep for the quick reply... I originally built the system with good/top specs at the time so I am somewhat peculiar on the higher graphic settings...
I played through all the Crysis games as a benchmark for my system, and recently beat the Metro series...

Now i'm playing Borderlands 2, and with its cartoony look (even with cell shading off) - maxed graphics with FXAA, frames drop down to ~45FPS which is somewhat noticeable when you can see most of the levels landscapes and such...

What I always ask myself when newer hardware gets released is..Are you happy with how your machine is performing now? What, if any, weaknesses do you see in your rig that you feel need to be replaced?

I think you've got yourself a fine system my friend. If it's still performing to your liking then there is no need to jump ship, but if you feel it's necessary then jump away.

Good luck.

Cpu is still great. Only thing that concerns me is if you GTX 580s are 1.5gb or 3gb. If they are the 1.5gb, then I'd go for the GTX 780. Performance wise, you'll get a nice boost, and you won't have to worry about games running right with sli. Games will feel smoother with the GTX 780 also. 2gb of vram is the minimum now a days imo, so the 3gb will have you set for awhile yet.

PCI-E 2.0 is more than fine for a single card. There is a big jump in performance if you're doing 3-way sli coming from pci-E 2.0 to 3.0, but single card, not much at all.

The open cooler of the Classified will raise case ambient a little bit, but not crazy. Might need to get another fan in there or adjust current air flow.

I have the same CPU i7 970 at 4 ghz and I'm running 2 titans in sli
Am I loosing any performence because of my CPU. I mean because of PCIE 3 and since i7 970 has only PCIE 2.0
Should I be worried I only play games and some rendering here there?
Or is there any benches that compares PCIE 3.0 vs 2.0?

From benchmarks that Ive seen 3.0 vs 2.0 is not much of a big difference.

What game and what res ?
