8 PIN ATX Power Connectors, Can They Be Split

Thread Starter
Ok, I've run into a little problem with hooking up my new power supply.

I'm running the MPower Z87 board which has a 24 Pin power connector as well as two (2) 8 Pin ATX Connectors on board.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 90

My power supply unit only has one 8 PIN EPS connector. Is it possible to split the 8-pin off the PSU to power both board connections or will that underpower the motherboard? Is it time to return this one and pick up a different PSU unit?

Boxed in yellow: 24 Pin connector (both connectors will need to be plugged)
Boxed in blue: Peripherals and SATA cables
Boxed in Green: EPS connector and PCI E connector

Thank in advance for your help and advice!

There probably isn't much you can do on a Z87 board that would require two 8-pins. Unless you're doing a ridiculously overclocked i7 and/or 3 high-end GPUs, just one should work fine.

You only need the second 8 pin if you are doing crazy overclocks or have 4 video cards

The motherboard sould be able to run fine with just the 24 pin and one 8 pin

My R4E runs fine with one 8 pin and a 24 pin so i know first hand you dont need both

OK, good to know...the three MB EPS/ATX connectors are listed as:

JPWR1 - 20 PIN
JPWR2 - 8 PIN
JPWR3 - 8 PIN

So I'll just plug into JPWR1 & JPWR2. I do plan on doing an overclock on the i7-4770k to hopefully 4.5Ghz+ so will I need that other plug powered?

I also saw this but I don't know how it would work unless the PSU doesn't regulate how much power can come out of each 8 PIN plugin. In other words would it allow 12v x 2 to come out of that one plug or is it limited to the 12v no matter how many times it's split.

Processed By eBay with ImageMagick, R1.1.1.M2a

Sorry for the ignorant questions, I just don't know much about power. weirdsmiley.gif

Dont use any adaptors just try it with one 8 pin and see if it works

Always avoid adaptors if you can

Dont think you will need two
