Did I buy a fake? - Audio Technica A900X Closed Headphones

So a few weeks ago I purchased a pair of Audio Technica A900xs from a classified local ad, brand new in box for $180. The guy selling them to me told me it was an impulse buy from a sale that BuyDig had on ebay back in april, on their ebay page (He gave me the reciept). BuyDig, aka beachcameras, is a licensed distributor of audio technica products. I also have a Xonar DX, a pretty good sound card.

Now heres the problem, when I got these headphones, I was really impressed with the audio quality, likely with a combination of placebo + going from a crappy gaming headset (I've never had hi-fi gear like this before). Then, I found the A900x thread on head-fi.org, and found a post which shocked me:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I bought a pair of these off amazon about a week ago. When I saw the buydig sale I figured i'd buy another pair. Well, I have them both now and there are some odd differences. The pair from amazon was bought through BeachCamera I believe.

The one from amazon seems to have weak bass relative to the buydig. However, the sound output of the buydig is louder on the left side than the right. I can correct this buy going into my sound card software and changing the balance of the right side to increase in volume by 7%.

Amazon left, buydig right:
Notice the thickness of the chrome lip. This pic is of the right can of both headphones

Amazon left, buydig right:
Something I didn't notice earlier is look at the ear padding. The buydig one looks awful and also does not completely cover the entire...whatever it's called lol (sry i'm a headphone noob) The pair from amazon not only covers but is nicely tucked inside the crevice

Pic of the boxes. The one from amazon had a little sticker that said 2012-03 and the one from buydig had a sticker that said 2012-05. Other than that the boxes were 100% identical

I'm just looking for some insight. Are these defective? fake? are they working within normal expectations?

What concerned me was that my headphones are exactly the same, the chrome rim/lip on the side of the headphones is significantly smaller to ones I've seen in unboxings, which that post confirms.
I'm now extremely concerned I received a fake pair, based on this can it be concluded that I did?

It could just be a change in manufacturing which led to lower quality control and differences in the final product.

This sort of thing happens all the time. Short of finding a pair that you personally believe are real and listening to them both side by side... if you are happy with the sound, then they are good.

E-Mail the company and ask them about it IMO.

That's the problem, its not that I'm unhappy with the sound, but I feel like it its a case of "the grass is greener on the other side" and that's what concerns me.

maybe there is a revision?

Tbh, I think you got the real deal.
I can't tell you if they perform within normal standards because I'm not using them but, the physical differences presented don't convince me of fake.
Any given product from any given brand can present slight differences depending on the when and where they were manufactured.
Look at the headsets! They are a really, really good "fake", don't you think? If you had a "fake" you would notice it was a fake the moment you saw it.

But thats the thing, I don't think I would notice. What if I just got a good fake, and the real deal is 10x better than what I am listening to?

If you are concerned, I would contact Audio-Technica and see if they can help you verify if your pair of headphones is legit or not.
