Philantropy - root is two Greek words "philia" meaning brotherly love, and "anthropos" meaning human or humankind. Combined in English they mean "Tax Shelter."

He "donated" 30 billion to a charity that HE controls. That's exactly the same strategy of protecting the family wealth that the robber-barons used a century ago. What you saw with him and Buffet was not true philanthropy, it was was an induction ceremony for two familys that finally had so much money that they needed to put it into a taxe exmpt foundation to protect it from the IRS, which I might add, is the entire reason that loophole exists in the tax code in the first place.

yep that's also why he's giving away most of his wealth at his death, rather than leaving it to his sons. right?

The IRS would not tax him 30 billion if he didn't donate rolleyes.gif. He donated that much because at his level of wealth it's just numbers that don't mean anything, and he feels it can do some good with the charity.

in a tech company i do really hope a ceo knows what he is doing smile.gif in a multi sector manufacturing company i dont know ... those are run by their sales and accountants, so i guess a cfo is more important in such company whereabout the ceo is doing longterm decisions, if the board lets him xD

I don't want to derail this any more than it already is, but I do want to make something clear- You get more mercury from a few servings of fish than you do from all the vaccinations you've ever had in your life.

i am pretty sure fish is not proper food for infants or toddlers wink.gif besides once children are older its surely not such problem as they are bigger and heavier so the same amount of mercury in fish is absorbed easier by their bodies, without consequences

Just look at Steve Ballmer's face and you'll see why Microsoft is in the same sentence with dumb.

I've been saying this for yeeeeaaaarrsssssss

No one cares about the consumer crap like Surface and Phone. Just make a better Windows OS (that isn't Windows 8 trash), make a better Office, and better enterprise tools. You'll continue to print money.

But no. Bing needs to be a massive loss every year.

Regardless of the reasons that Bill Gates is giving his money away, he still is and by doing so is still helping both humanity in general along with poor people who desperately need that help much more than most of the people on OCN (if not everyone) would be.
