Do this really quick. Open Chrome. Open twitter. Open Google Hangout, Open the Chrome Store.
Now open a new tab and put "about: memory" (without the quotes) in the URL bar. Maybe open a couple more tabs.
Now open a couple of your favorite applications.
Now open the task manager (I assume you don't use *NIX from what you're saying)
Look at how much memory those apps plus chrome are using.
Note a couple of points:
1. Chrome doesn't have great memory management (FF would be better)
3. Online apps (such as twitter) simply call the an external API and don't have nearly as much data to deal with as the regular websites, so the "app" version are going to be smaller and more efficient.
4. Unless you have some major bug in chrome, you STILL aren't using anywhere close to 3.5GB of RAM even when running all those apps in separate chrome processes on one of the least memory efficient platforms in history (JS and web).
