Sooo I'm going to build a hidden door.. (to a PC room! Brainstorm!)

The catch: I DONT want to use a bookshelf, which is what everyone else seems to use! Its obvious why they do, no matter how perfect the cut or pristine the job.. there are going to be lines around the frame of whatever your false door is. A bookshelf is perfect to hide that because you can insert it directly into the frame without a second thought, or you can build around the entire frame itself:

Now like I said, I don't want to do a bookshelf door. This is going to be in a basement (leading to the only finished part), so it would be out of place to begin with. What wouldn't be out of place in an unfinished portion of a basement? Well, how bout a fake fuse box!

Here's what I got so far: the switches are going to do something. Either unlock the door itself (one switch, or by a pattern?), or maybe just open a compartment with a deadbolt switch and play zelda puzzle-solved music (lol wishful thinking but probably out of my league!). There are many decisions to be made, which is where this thread comes in!

-how do I conceal the door? wire routing in a huge rectangle would be somewhat obvious, and the fuse box itself doesnt have the benefits of the bookshelf. could an entire section of wall swing open with hinges directly into the foundation? that's all I got and it doesnt seem too feasible (looking at like 5 feet of wall to work with).

-what should I use to lock the door, and how do I hook it up to the switches? A deadbolt, a gate latch with some kind of string?

-HOW DO I MAKE THE ZELDA THING HAPPEN!?

etc

This project is still a few months away, but if anyone wants to help me brainstorm: lets do this!

Dude that sounds epic, depending on the size of the room you should make it a secret place for you and your buddy's to escape 'relationships' haha.

Pictures of the area could help a lot. Sounds like an awesome escape to have though. Reasons for being hidden? Just because?

Two reasons: because I'm 13 at heart, and I spent too much time on houzz looking at 20,000 bookshelf doors thumb.gif Man cave all the way!

I'll work on pictures of the area later (newly purchased house!), but it's not currently much to look at. The area I'm referring to doesn't even have a wall yet. Here's the thirty second sketch!

I think the easier way to "hide" it, is make it like an old style garage door. The entire false wall would hinge and slide up. toward the ceiling thumb.gif

One-Piece-Garage-Doors.jpg

Basically the top track is perpendicular to the vertical track and no bend in like a typical garage door.

This is a low tech method but i think it fits all requirements.

i got a img hope it shows up. If not add a standard interior door (to act as a storage space) to unfinished side of basement with a walk way/path UNDER the stairs to the finished side.

Its no batman style but is not something that sick out like a sore thumb.

Oh my god hahaha, I can't even begin to wrap my head around what would be required for an entire wall section to hinge up! This would obviously be less of an actual framed wall and more of a thinner mockup (I cant imagine being able to do that with a 2x4 framed wall). Not a bad idea, but 8 feet of clearance along the ceiling might be a problem. Will have to look into something like that!

@systemaxd, also a great idea.. but unfortunately the huge oil tank is in that corner frown.gif
