CPU reduces multiplier at stock speeds - Page 2

Thread Starter
I replaced the Freezer 13 with the CPU's stock cooler and got the exact same results on stock settings, the Freezer 13 has 8 individual heat pipes, why would one faulty one cripple its cooling performance?

*EDIT* I used the case's built-in thermometer to measure the temp on the CPU's heat spreader and left it for 10 minutes running Prime95. WHiNFO64 reads the CPU temp at 70C while the physical thermometer reads 38-39C.
It isn't the cooler, that I can say with a fair amount of certainty and its not HWiNFO because Task Manager even shows the reduction in speeds on the CPU.

Here's an interesting little tidbit..... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/a10-5800k-trinity-efficiency,3315-2.html

Pay attention to the part where he says there may be a mechanism in the bios to reduce processor speeds if power draw becomes to much. Also note they used the very same motherboard you have. Sounds like a double wammy. Temp and voltage draw reduces the top end of overclocking. Don't forget that using the onboard video contributes to the temps.

As a further thought you may have a bad chip and or motherboard. Are they still under warranty? Maybe AMD/MSI will replace it. Beyond that I don't know what else you can try as we seem to have hit on just about every variable.

Sorry if this sounds bad but the problems I see with the FM2 platform make me glad I stuck with the AM3+ platform as I had been considering the A10 before I got a deal on an Athlon II X4 and the MSI GD80v2. Integrated solutions in the past never wow'ed me as I had an AM2 system with integrated Nvidia 8200 graphics and it's performance truly sucked for games. I've always used discrete video cards when performance was desired.

I already know about the motherboards limitations on the power draw, that's the reason why I can't get it past 2.3GHz.
And I'd like to figure out which is faulty before I talk to AMD or MSI.

The CPUID HW monitor readouts on mine have multiple temps for the processor one for the package temp (the temp at the heat spreader) and one for each of the cores.

With prime 95 running my package temp is 82c and the cores are at 45c. What I think is that you should try to find the AMD spec paper on the A10 to see what you can get out of it. Also find out what sensor chip your motherboard is running. My best guess is bad motherboard and or bios issues not yet fixed by MSI. If it is indeed bios issues then replacing the board won't help. You do have the latest bios for that the board issued by MSI correct?

Yes I'm running the latest BIOS version for my board (v2.3 I believe). I have bee planning on replacing my board with a Gigabyte GA-F2A85X-UP4, because they overclock better than my current board. So if its the CPU too I'll consider upgrading to either a Richland A10-6800K or an Athlon X4 760K because I don't use the IGP.
Thanks for the help tough.
